Job Description:
Are you passionate about traffic management and data analysis? Do you have a background in engineering and a keen interest in transportation planning?
The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) is seeking a Traffic Monitoring System (TMS) Coordinator to ensure compliance with federal standards and specifications for traffic data collection.
As the TMS Coordinator, you will play a crucial role in supervising a team responsible for processing and converting raw traffic data into valuable information for various NDOT divisions and external stakeholders. If you're ready to take on a challenging and rewarding role that directly impacts transportation infrastructure and planning, this position might be the perfect fit for you.
Pay range is $34.857 -$51.383 per hour. The pay rate may be commensurate with education and/or experience within fiscal constraints if approved.
If unable to fill at the Professional Engineer I level, will consider applicants at the Engineer level which requires a bachelor's degree in an Engineering discipline. Must obtain Engineer Intern Enrollment (Engineering in Training Certification) within one year of employment. Pay rate for this classification is $30.577 per hour.
Job Duties:
•Serve as NDOT's Traffic Monitoring System (TMS) Coordinator. The federal government has mandated that each state have a TMS in place that meets federal standards and specifications. These standards change over time. The TMS Coordinator must ensure that NDOT's systems are able to pass the Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) review. The TMS Coordinator must advise NDOT's Traffic Counter Shop of possible changes in traffic data collection requirements.
•Supervise the Traffic Analysis Unit of two Transportation Planners who process and convert the flow of "raw" traffic data from the Traffic Counter Shop into useable public data for various databases. Provide current and forecast traffic volumes to NDOT divisions including Intermodal Planning, Project Development, Traffic Engineering, Roadway Design, Bridge, Materials and Research, Construction, Districts and Local Projects. Traffic volumes directly impact the design standards used on highway projects. Supply traffic information to all others who request it. This can include requests from other state agencies (Game and Parks, State Patrol, Economic Development, State Senators), the general public, consultants and developers. This duty includes working with NDOT's web master to maintain current traffic data on NDOT's web site.
•Collect and distribute requests for traffic data to appropriate staff. This includes tracking all traffic requests by project number and status. Any traffic request needed for new highway alignments or in major urban areas, are referred to the Traffic Analysis Unit for their analysis. Provide traffic information to FHWA as part of their annual Highway Performance Monitoring System (HPMS). Submit information to FHWA concerning truck weight and length characteristics. Make annual estimates of freight movement. This involves making estimates of ton-miles of freight moved on all roads and streets in Nebraska. Coordinate the traffic analysis unit's mainframe activities with the Business Technology Support Division (BTSD). Over one dozen mainframe traffic tables are supported in the Integrated Highway Inventory (IHI) database. These mainframe database tables (traffic logs, count summaries, detailed count data, etc.) are essential to NDOT's operations and used to estimate Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT).
•Perform other duties as assigned.
