Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

The UNC Adams School of Dentistry Office of Academic Affairs oversees the various educational programs offered through the School and supports academic excellence. The Office of Academic Affairs staff members often participate in the admissions process and implement curriculum reviews and accreditation.The Office of Academic Affairs offers pre-admission evaluations for prospective DDS students, assists current students with any number of issues, and advocates for the student body to ensure needs are met.

Position Summary:

The Assistant Director, Teaching and Learning serves as the school-level lead for all things related to maximizing the educational experience at UNC Adams School of Dentistry. The Assistant Director works directly with faculty on a range of initiatives. These include 1) conducting course consultations with faculty in need of support 2) coordinating development, collection, review, and approval of course syllabi 3) collecting and analyzing student data in support of student performance reviews in Teaching Committees 4) creation of educational training resources including online modules 5) developing and delivering recommendations on how to improve assessment practices within the DDS program 6) mapping elements of the new, ACT curriculum 7) program management of the peer teaching review process for junior faculty 8) coordination of Basecamp, the orientation piece of the DDS curriculum 9) maintenance of templates for syllabi, lesson plans, etc. 10) Development and delivery of faculty development sessions on relevant best practices in education among other tasks related to education and the curriculum.


This role is high-visibility; all teaching faculty will work with the person in this role directly, so being a people-person is extremely valuable. A successful candidate will be comfortable consulting with faculty on education best practices, serving as the teaching and learning expert, despite not being an expert in dental content.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Master's degree in education, special education, instructional design, educational technology, educational media, or related discipline with coursework in curriculum development or learning theory; or a Bachelor's degree in the assigned discipline and two years of experience in teaching, educational testing, or instructional design and curriculum development; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Ability to assist educators in development of instructional strategies including determining long range and immediate curriculum needs and objectives. Ability to determine instructional goals and objectives relating to specific presentations, lectures, lecture series, or entire courses and suggest the appropriate media components, material organization and design, effective communication direction, work methods and standards, and personnel resource management. Ability to review content of materials, courses, class sequences, learner objectives, and determine the most effective teaching methods to communicate concepts and the design of instructional materials for a wide variety of subject areas. Ability to develop evaluation programs to meet the needs of students on either a group or individual basis.


Basic knowledge of educational/learning theories and principles. Basic knowledge of teaching methodology and techniques. Basic knowledge of instructional design systems, communications theory, and education materials production techniques. Basic knowledge of educational measurements for students with special learning needs. Basic knowledge of classroom techniques and academic activities at each educational level. Basic understanding of a wide variety of subject areas for which materials are produced


Demonstration of strong written and oral skills. Ability to draft abstracts. Ability to maintain positive and professional relationships with individuals at various levels at the School of Dentistry, including faculty, department chairs, staff, and students. Ability to prepare written proposals, interim reports, final reports, including graphs, results, conclusions, and recommendations. Ability to assist in writing reports and disseminating research findings at meetings and conferences and answer general questions about the reports/findings .


Ability to develop evaluation instruments to measure the effectiveness of instruction. Ability to analyze course/lecture objectives and identify key concepts.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Prefer a candidate with curriculum experience in health affairs education, but not required. Experience in K-12 education is viewed favorably.
