Job Summary

Under direction of supervising clinicians, the Veterinary Technician I (Surgery) will coordinate the clinical activities and related instructional duties of Soft Tissue Surgery in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) and provide highly skilled and advanced veterinary technical assistance in the field of Soft Tissue Surgery. Duties are performed with independence, moving freely throughout the assigned portion of the hospital (Soft Tissue Surgery), determining where services are needed.



Duties & Responsibilities


  • Coordinate and supervise the technical support activities for Soft Tissue Surgery in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH), which includes but is not limited to:
    • Assist with the coordination and management of veterinary technical assistance in Soft Tissue Surgery.
    • Assist with coordinating the scheduling of appointments, taking into consideration other factors that may affect a given days appointments and the patient's subsequent surgery.
    • Handle client and referring veterinarian communications, which includes estimates for cost of services, in-depth description of soft tissue surgical diseases and procedures available, and follow-up with clients during the early post-operative period.
    • Assist with coordination of sections or areas of the hospital in relation to consultations, client hospital admission, diagnostic testing, anesthesia, imaging, or other procedures.
    • Manage medical record maintenance and entry of charges for services rendered.
    • Supervise lower level veterinary technicians and students. Make hiring recommendations.
    • Manage supplies and stock levels in the ward. Make recommendations and assist in the assessment of quality.
    • Make recommendations for the development of the section.
    • Assist with evaluations of Parkland veterinary technician students and assist clinicians with grades for veterinary students. Assist with scheduling with daily activities.
  • Provide highly skilled and advanced veterinary technical assitance and further develop knowledge by learning new techniques and incorporating new equipment as necessary.
    • Provide veterinary technical instruction to veterinary students, residents/interns, and veterinary technician students, as well as lower level veterinary technicians.
    • Serve as a liaison to referring veterinarians, accurately convey medical information between the referring veterinarian and the Soft Tissue Surgery service and respond directly to veterinary technical questions.

Additional Physical Demands

An environment of stress may be anticipated, hence, the person in this position must be capable of reliably functioning in such an area. Exposure to anesthetic agents may present a potential hazard. An ability to work in the presence of animal waste and fluids will be necessary. To some degree, unpleasantness may be experienced under such conditions.

The handling of any animal presents some element of risk or injury. Persons allergic to animal dander, dust, pollen, hay, etc., may experience discomfort in this position. Work involving animals with various disease states may expose the individual to viral, bacterial, and fungal agents known to be transmissible to man. Exposure to chemicals and anesthetic waste gases may be potentially hazardous if mishandled or misused.



Minimum Qualifications



1. Successful completion of a veterinary technology program accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).


2. Current certification as a Veterinary Technician by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR).


3. One (1) year (12 months) of paramedical veterinary experience comparable to that performed at the Veterinary Technician (General) level of this series or in other positions of comparable responsibility.



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Veterinary Technician Certification must be maintained throughout employment.
  • Familiar with federal regulations and university and hospital polices regarding the use and handling of controlled substances.
  • Skill in the operation of surgical, laboratory and diagnostic equipment.
  • Able to adapt to new technologies, procedures and equipment.
  • Demonstrate adhere to strict protocols.
  • Able to instruct veterinary medical/technician students in patient care protocol and procedures and in the use of equipment or instrumentation.
  • Able to recognize abnormalities in vital signs of patients, assess charges observed, and take necessary action in the absence of a veterinarian.
  • Able to operate on the clinical floor and anticipate needs and directions of staff and students regarding patients and methods of care.
  • Able to observe, record, compile and assimilate data.
  • Able to explain terminology used in veterinary medicine.
  • Knowledge related to the care and handling of anesthetic waste gases will be taught.
  • Able to multi-task, pay close attention to details and work calmly and professionally under pressure.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Courteous and polite.


Appointment Information


This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 4847 - Veterinary Technician I position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible. The collective bargaining agreement sets an hourly wage of $24.10. Final salary offered will be determined by a thorough assessment of available market data, internal salary equity, candidate experience and qualifications, collective bargaining agreements, and budget constraints. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position.
