Exploratory and Pre-Professional Advising Center

Career Advisor





Provide career advising to undergraduate, exploratory students who are Undeclared, Pre-Health, and Pre-Law within the Exploratory and Pre-professional Advising Center (Explore Center). Assist students in exploring interests, skills, values, as they relate to identifying careers and majors through on-line resources and interpretation of career assessments. Connect students to experiential learning, internship opportunities, and develop strategies for building professional and relational support networks to assist students in exploring careers of interest. Deliver core presentations and outreach to programs and departments serving exploratory and pre-professional students to engage students in career development, skill building, and learning. Be able to understand how cultural context, differences, and institutional/social barriers influence the student experience in order to apply inclusive strategies in working with all students.



Collaborate with Explore Center academic advisors, University Career Services, and other campus offices to engage in best practices and to develop programming to aid in exploring students' career development. Develop and deliver presentations to various sized audiences, which may include students, faculty, staff, and/or parents. Develops tools/resources to aid academic and career advisors across campus in their work with students exploring major and careers and provides training on exploratory career advising to key staff. Participates in UNL Career Services career advising meetings and staff development activities as appropriate. Prepare students for application to health and law school through review of resumes, cover letters, personal statements, and applications; conduct mock interviews; and discuss part-time job and internship search strategies. Utilize various student information systems to record contacts in digital notes systems. Occasional evening and weekend work required.



Minimum Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree plus 2 years of experience with 1:1 college (or closely related) student contact required (Master's degree in related field may substitute for experience). Ability to work with students in 1:1 or group advising settings. Must have demonstrated organization, time management, and verbal/written communication skills. Experience must demonstrate an ability to learn and translate extensive information, policies and procedures. Must have demonstrated ability to work with diverse student backgrounds. Demonstrated ability to both collaborate and self-manage. Demonstrated ability to develop and/deliver programs to students, faculty, and staff.


Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in higher education administration, college student personnel, counseling, psychology, sociology or related field preferred. Demonstrated advising and/or counseling skills. Experience using student information systems and technology platforms. Experience building relationships across multiple constituencies and managing projects.
