Position Summary:
The professional academic advisor provides academic assistance and supports the educational development of current and perspective students. Professional academic advisors promote student success in areas including but not limited to recruitment, major declaration, orientation, retention, and graduation.
Duties & Responsibilities:
The Professional Academic Advisor supports high quality academic advising practices for undergraduate students at Arkansas State University and performs related duties:
Provides comprehensive academic advising for undergraduate students to support student retention and graduation initiatives.
Identifies and helps resolve obstacles impeding the academic success of all undergraduate students, as well as, serves on the campus wide advising committee
Analyzes students' academic and personal issues/concerns and provides referral/intervention services, acts as an advocate as appropriate
Supports students in developing a required Student Educational Plan (SEP) in Degree Works to meet graduation requirements
Oversees degree evaluations, check sheets, referrals, and other advising-related tasks from pre-enrollment through graduation
Informs students about opportunities, alternatives, limitations and possible consequences of academic decisions (e.g. adding, dropping and withdrawing from courses; change of program, major and/or transfer equivalencies)
Explains academic policies, procedures, and guidelines to students in order to meet their educational goals
Educates students about the value of academic advisement and the importance of the registration process
Guides students through college and university level administrative processes
Develops and promotes internal communication and resource sharing in order to benefit student success.
Encourages interactions with faculty mentors
Serves as a liaison for respective colleges at new student orientations and recruitment events
Adheres to FERPA and confidentiality of student information
Maintains appropriate student records and documents student interactions
Utilizes advising and retention technology systems to manage student data
May be assigned to support specific academic colleges, programs or student populations
May teach a first-year experience course(s) as needed
Participates in individual and collaborative professional development and remains current with technology used to provide advising services.
Other duties as assigned: Academic advising and all primary responsibilities of this position are supervised by University College.

General Days/Hours:
Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Additional hours as requested and/or needed Regular and reliable attendance Occasional Saturday or evening hours

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in advising or retention programs preferred
Minimum Qualifications:
An earned Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution of higher education is required.
