St. Paul's Senior Services is searching for an experienced, strategic and dynamic leader to join their team as their Vice President of Operations. This role reports directly to the Chief Operating Officer and supervises Executive Directors of St. Paul's housing operations including residential care facilities (over 400 units), a 59-bed skilled nursing facility and other housing programs (e.g. affordable housing, supportive housing). The VP of Operations also supervises directors of assigned areas of operations such as dining and environmental services. This position is responsible for day to day oversight of assigned operational areas and also for strategic development of new housing initiatives alongside the leadership team. 

 

SCOPE

Supervisory Responsibility – Executive Directors, Directors of assigned areas of operations

Budget Responsibility – Operating revenues and expense, including evaluating and approving business plans and operating budgets within assigned areas

Community Engagement – Enhance resident, family and team member engagement as well as risk management/quality oversight in all operational areas

Provide high-performance leadership and management of Executive Directors and Directors that support and align to the timely achievement of the organizational, annual, operational, and financial goals and standards of excellence:


  • Drive results through the recruitment, training, and retention of Executive Directors and Directors that demonstrate excellence in customer service and goal attainment.

  • Establish, observe, measure and evaluate Executive Directors’ and Directors’ performance to assure compliance with organizational standards and attainment of organizational and community objectives; conducts regular performance observations, assessments, and discussions.

  • Provide customized training appropriate for each Executive Director’s/Director’s experience levels and/or to address individual or team performance skills gaps.

  • Develop and manage effective vendor and internal relationships to ensure communication of messages that support and align to the achievement of strategic objectives.

  • Guide Executive Directors and Directors in budget preparation, financial and cost management and in conjunction with Finance and Sales/Marketing, oversee all aspects of Community/Department revenue generation and budgeting.

  • Monitor risk activities that are required from the Executive Directors who function as local risk managers.

  • Maintains high level of knowledge about communities’ issues through structured meeting and reporting system. 

  • Perform site visits to communities within assigned region on a regular basis

  • Support in developing, implementing and achieving the annual community budget for each community within the region. This includes meeting/exceeding occupancy goals as well as controlling operating expenses.

  • Track satisfaction survey results for both residents and team members and work with Executive Directors to develop and implement subsequent action plans.

  • Fill in as the Executive Director in the community if needed during gaps in oversight.

  • Work with the COO and Senior Leadership on development and implementation of organization strategies, objectives, protocols, initiatives, and programs.

  • Work in conjunction with other departments of the organization such as PACE and Sales/Marketing to collaboration and mutual success in goals.

  • May lead significant leadership operational initiatives such as development of current and new housing programs such as middle market offerings, affordable housing, etc.

Knowledge/ Skills/ Abilities


  • Hold a California Licensed Nursing Home Administrator and/or a Residential Care for the Elderly certification.

  • Advanced knowledge of nursing home and senior living operations at all levels including nursing and care services, sales and marketing, etc.

  • Familiarity with a range of senior living industry services and models including independent and assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, PACE, affordable housing, supportive housing, active adult, etc. 

  • The principles of organization, strategic and corporate planning, management and supervision.

  • Accounting information systems, budgeting and internal controls.

  • Operations, programs and problems, and resources available to resolve problems.

  • Laws of various governmental agencies regulating the senior living industry.

  • Computer software skills including Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Power BI, and community lead data base program

Minimum Requirements 

Education– Bachelor degree required; Master’s degree preferred.

Experience/Training– Over five (5) years of experience in a field related to affordable housing, multi-level residential or healthcare facility administration at a senior administrator level; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations–Residential Care Facilities for Elderly (RCFE) license required (or similar requirements outside California), or the ability to obtain within six months of hire. Nursing Home Administrator license preferred. Valid and current RCFE and NHA licenses (if applicable) must be maintained throughout duration of employment.

Travel– 50% local San Diego travel to sites
