About the Position:



This role is an on-campus, in-person position.


The Instructional Technologist will work with the Online Production Services Team's Online Learning Experience (OLE) Designer in order to develop materials in Canvas, the Learning Management System, and to coordinate the completion of accessibility elements with faculty and student workers. Using the Blueprint designed for the course, this person would build the course and add all of the engaging elements that provide a student-centered and authentic online learning experience for students at Southern Methodist University. This is a 12-month position requiring full time in-office hours.



Essential Functions:



  • Work with OLE Designer and faculty to design and implement innovative and effective online learning techniques.


  • Work with OLE Designer and faculty to revise existing courses for online delivery. Create instructional material: courses, curriculum, student guides or training manuals.


  • Coordinate efforts with and report progress regularly to course production project manager(s) and other leadership. Update documents for tracking and reporting purposes.


  • Advise, train and support faculty on the elements used in Canvas to achieve course learning objectives as defined by course production project manager(s) and faculty.


  • Assist team with developing appropriate assessment tools, discussions, and strategies to align with course learning objectives as defined by course production project manager(s) and faculty.


  • Ensure all content of the course is accessible and adheres to QM standards.


  • Coordinate activities alongside faculty throughout each course's development life-cycle to the course production project manager(s) to ensure that deadlines are realized.


  • Assisting with the copying of course content into new course shells and/or into new terms. Expected to develop professional proficiency and to leverage common SMU instructional technologies as defined by course production needs.


  • Perform regular course accessibility checks according to institutional quality/compliance/accreditation requirements.


  • Maintain awareness updates to Canvas, new techniques and related technology tools. Coordinate with/ Supervise STAR students assisting in accessibility work. Performs other duties as assigned.







Qualifications



Education and Experience:



Bachelor's is required.


A minimum of 3 years of experience is required. Experience in Learning Management Systems is preferred.


The candidate must have two years of demonstrated experience in an academic or training environment in the building of course content for online delivery, including course modules, web resources, and other digital course materials.


The candidate must have familiarity with adult learning theories and learning outcome assessment techniques.


The candidate must have a working knowledge of learning management systems (e.g., Canvas) for instruction.



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:



Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate broadly across the University and develop and maintain effective relationships with a wide range of constituencies. Must also demonstrate strong written communication skills. Candidate should have ability for independent/self-directed action and strong attention to detail.


Candidate must possess strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and analyze problems, as well as devise solutions. Must also have strong organizational, planning and time management skills.


Candidate must possess the ability to skillfully use various audio and video technologies (video cameras, webcams, wireless mics, etc.), basic knowledge of streaming audio, video, video-conferencing as well as familiarity with modern quality rubrics (eg. Quality Matters)


Candidate must be familiar with software such as: Canvas, Zoom, Adobe Captivate, Camtasia, SnagIt, non-linear video editing software, audio editing software as well as possess knowledge of emerging technologies as related to teaching and learning.
