WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER

The Nags Head Woods Preserve Assistant performs operations and maintenance support of facilities, trails, other amenities and infrastructure at the Preserve and assists with visitor services and outreach events.



WE'RE LOOKING FOR YOU

The Nags Head Woods Preserve Assistant position has a focus on land stewardship and visitor services in Nags Head Woods Preserve (Preserve), owned by The Nature Conservancy in northeastern North Carolina. They work closely with conservation staff and partners to maintain trails and facilities as well as provide a meaningful experience for visitors at the Preserve. They also support conservation staff with ongoing administrative tasks as needed.

Key activities may include:

  • Preserve Stewardship Support (50%):
    • Organize and clean kiosk, lobby, and other visitor areas to appropriately represent The Nature Conservancy.
    • Assist with preserve stewardship projects including invasive plant management and native plant restoration.
    • Ensure hiking trails are passable and clean; other physical outdoor tasks as directed.
    • Assist with preserve monitoring activities such as trail counters, game cameras, and vegetative plots.
    • Perform and assist with facility maintenance such as carpentry repairs, upkeep, and/or improvements to buildings, signs, and infrastructure.
  • Visitor services, outreach, and education (40%):
    • Greet visitors, engage in visitor conversation, and answer visitor questions.
    • Assist with projects to improve visitor experience such as brochures, signage, or seasonal programming like learning carts or open house events.
    • Develop points of interest along preserve trails as talking points/signs for guided hikes.
    • Photograph nature sights on the Preserve and assist staff in promoting the Preserve on social media.
    • Attend and participate in Coastal Environmental Education Network Meetings (CEEN) or other events.
  • General Office Support (10%):
    • Create and maintain facility and stewardship management electronic records.
    • Scan and upload documents as digital files.
    • Perform additional administrative tasks as directed, including mailings, and updating documents.

This is an hourly, part-time position (19 hours/week), with a 3-year initial contract subject to renewal. Responsibilities of this role include:

  • Interacting with visitors.
  • Working under close or infrequent supervision.
  • Working in variable weather conditions, in isolated settings, and under minor physically demanding circumstances.
  • Requiring minor physical exertion and/or muscular strain.



WHAT YOU'LL BRING

  • AS/Technical or vocational degree in science-related field and 1-year related experience in custodial and ecological land management or similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with natural systems.
  • Experience in ecological land management principles.
  • Experience operating and or repairing various types of equipment and machinery.


DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Prior work and/or volunteer experience with the public.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in both an independent and team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow instructions from colleagues and supervisors.
  • Experience operating various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g. hand tools, lawn mower, chainsaw, boat, kayak or canoe, etc.).
  • Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g. First Aid, CPR, herbicide application, and driver's license).
  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • 1 - 2 years related experience in custodial and ecological land management or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Some experience managing volunteers or entry level staff.
  • Ability to recognize plant and animal species to complete preserve management activities.
  • Knowledge/understanding of current trends and practices in conservation, land management and natural resource preservation/conservation or similar field.
  • Ability to complete tasks independently with respect to timeline(s).
  • Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g.; Word, Excel, Web browsers).
  • Communicating clearly via written, spoken and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.

SALARY INFORMATION

The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $20.00 - $22.00 per hour. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate's actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate's location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment.
