Job Description:

Major and Career Exploration Coaches help students explore their interests, values and skills to determine a best fit for major and future career. Major and Career Exploration Coaches assist all students who desire assistance in choosing a major and identifying a future career direction. They also serve as academic counselors, specifically, advising undecided and exploratory students and assisting them in successfully exploring majors, selecting a degree plan, and matriculating to their degree granting colleges.  Additional duties include: responding to student and parent inquiries, monitoring individual students progress, assessing academic concerns, and assisting in developing recovery strategies. Participation in recruitment events, presenting, working with other academic departments, contributing to event planning and outreach, and meeting with prospective students and families.


Primary duties include but are not limited to:



  • Communicates information regarding academic programs, policies, and procedures based on students' individual needs.

  • Assists students in realizing their educational, professional, and personal goals by offering specialized guidance. 

  • Operates within an extensive campus network of institutional resources designed to help students maximize their college experience.

  • Participates in the comprehensive onboarding Academic Advisor Training Program.

  • Assesses the holistic needs of students, provides support, and refers to appropriate campus partners.

  • Develops a rapport of trust with assigned students.

  • Responds to communications via phone and email in a timely manner.

  • Manages administrative tasks associated with preparing and completing academic advising sessions.

  • Evaluates, updates, and securely maintains student and advising records.

  • Processes academic forms such as Veteran Student Form, ROTC Academic Plan, Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress Appeal, and petitions.

  • Advises transfer students regarding transfer articulation, review course equivalencies, and assist with course planning and degree completion.

  • Conducts proactive outreach to encourage timely advising appointments, registration, and the completion of tasks that lead to degree progress.

  • Conducts graduation checks and degree and minor clearances.

  • Participates in institutional retention and completion initiatives.

  • Engages with the Academic Advising Community through monthly meetings and professional development opportunities.

  • Serves as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) by fulfilling training and reporting obligations related to campus safety protocols.

  • Assisting undecided students in exploring and choosing their academic major(s), planning their degree program(s), and identifying potential career paths 

    • Discussing career opportunities, preparation for graduate or professional school, internship opportunities

    • Interpreting university academic policies and procedure for students

    • Assisting student with course selection, scheduling, registration, monitor progress towards degree

    • Referring students to university resources to enhance academic performance and educational success

    • Counseling students with early progress reports

    • Counseling with students that have earned D, F, W grades in pre-requisite courses

    • Counseling with students who have been placed on Academic Probation or Notice



  • Providing students with major and career exploration coaching and support 

    • Providing individualized coaching focused on interests, goals, and situation

    • Offering online and in-office career assessments and interpreting assessment outcomes

    • Providing tailored support for special populations of students including retention outreach students, Business contract students, and Pre-Health students



  • Teaching department courses: Choosing a Major and Exploring Careers 

  • Providing seminars and presentations to various student and stakeholder groups and organizations

  • Promoting department and college resources and services 

  • Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.

Required Education: Bachelor's degree.


Skills:



  • Effective verbal and written communication

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office to include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and ability to navigate and maintain databases

  • Skilled in communicating well and building rapport quickly with students, faculty, and staff

  • Detail oriented for accuracy of data and information

  • Highly organized and ability to handle multiple projects and deadlines

  • Demonstrates ability to learn, interpret, and articulate complex policies and procedures

  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of state, university, college, and major policies and procedures

  • Willingness to work independently, collaboratively, and under supervision

  • Committed to maintaining confidentiality and securing sensitive information

  • Requires contact with other departments and university officials.


Departmental Preferences:



  • Master's Degree 

  • Minimum two years academic advising experience

  • Counseling/Coaching experience

  • Minimum one year teaching experience

  • Knowledge of OU programs
