CITY OF BENBROOK
Fire Fighter - Paramedic
$75,260.00 to $91,479.00 Annually

The City of Benbrook is accepting applications for a Fire Fighter-Paramedic.  

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

Responds to fire alarms, emergency medical service calls and other emergency calls; performs fire suppression functions including rescue, deploying and operating hose, ventilating roofs, performing salvage work after fires, Hazardous Materials response incidents and other related tasks associated with fire suppression; administers first aid and emergency medical services to injured persons. Inspects, cleans and maintains apparatus, equipment, quarters, and grounds; conducts inspections of businesses and hydrants to ensure compliance with City ordinances pertaining to fire prevention codes; participates in and occasionally conducts fire training classes and drills and studies technical materials on equipment operation, fire suppression, hazardous materials and fire prevention to improve or maintain an effective level of performance; performs related duties such as physical training each shift; studies maps to learn the district assigned as necessary. May be required to relieve the driver, Lieutenant, or Captain to include driving fire apparatus and operating pump. Functions as ambulance attendant or driver; conduct station tours for schoolchildren; perform other duties as directed.

Examples of Duties:

  • Operates various kinds of apparatus such as Engines, Ladders, Tankers, Ambulances and Support Vehicles.
  • Operates Fire and EMS equipment and tools in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Inspects apparatus, equipment and tools to ensure proper operation. Creates reports on missing, damaged or out of service equipment.
  • Maintains fire station and grounds.
  • Responsible for the correct notation in journals, preparing and submitting records and reports in a complete and timely manner.
  • Attends and participates in training sessions and other classes in the fire department.
  • Assists in maintaining all Fire and EMS apparatus and equipment in a state of constant readiness.
  • Performs fire code enforcement inspections, pre-fire planning, and fire prevention programs as assigned
  • Maintains current certification in both Fire and EMS disciplines as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

Ability to sit, stand and transport self from building to building. Ability to attend functions and meetings in buildings and at other sites. Must be able to fight fires and perform strenuous physical tasks. Works in and out-of-door environment; subject to extreme temperature, inclement weather, and intermittent exposure to dust, fumes and loud noise for extended periods of time; maintains physical activity over prolonged periods of time including standing attacking a fire, walking, kneeling and stooping in awkward positions, and moving/lifting heavy objects of up to 100 plus pounds. May be exposed to electrical hazards, communicable diseases and chemicals while engaged in fire fighting or other rescue and medical activities.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS:

Skill in communicating and understanding written and oral instruction; ability to reason abstractly using mechanical concepts. Must have abilities to: take effective action in emergency situations; exhibit emotional stability and knowledge to perform hazardous firefighting duties under stress; get along with the public; and maintain physical endurance and agility. Knowledge of location of streets, fire hydrants, and mayor buildings in an assigned area; the operating and mechanical principles involved in the operation of fire or rescue apparatus, and allied equipment, modern firefighting and fire prevention principles and practices.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION:

High School diploma or equivalent; Texas Class “B" Driver's License; active Paramedic certification by the Texas Department of State Health Services, active Basic Firefighter Certification as issued by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection.

A REFUSAL TO PRODUCE THE SAMPLE, ANY ATTEMPT TO TAMPER WITH THE SAMPLE OR THE POSITIVE INDICATION OF THE PRESENCE OF DRUGS WILL RESULT IN AN AUTOMATIC DISQUALIFICATION FROM EMPLOYMENT.
