Job Description:

The Carver College of Medicine Department of Anatomy & Cell Biology is seeking a Research Assistant for the Engelhardt lab. This Research Assistant will assist in animal care for disease models involving bay, after hours, and weekend work. Animal care involves close monitoring, significant animal handling, feeding, implementation of a clinical plan, and assisting in reproductive technologies. Performing select bioassays are required for the care of disease animals. Execute planned research activities using observation, measurement and analytical techniques.



Key Areas of Responsibility:




Research:


Assists in animal care for disease models involving bay, after hours, and weekend work. Animal care involves close monitoring, significant animal handling, feeding, implementation of a clinical plan, and assisting in reproductive technologies. Performing select bioassays are required for the care of disease animals. Execute planned research activities using observation, measurement and analytical techniques.



Conduct Experiments:


Perform experimental procedures in the care of newborn and adult ferrets with a genetic disease, maintain records of drug treatments and rearing conditions, record and consolidate data. Possess the ability to adapt the care of ferrets based on clinical symptoms. Collect tissue, urine, and stool samples and perform biological analysis. Perform routine experimental procedures and special care on laboratory animals, night monitoring of animals, including the administration of drugs.



Analyze and Summarize Data; Prepare Reports; Contribute to Manuscripts, Publications: Prepare data for analysis and assist in research and writing for the publication of manuscripts.



Facilities and Equipment Management: Assist in the maintenance of lab equipment.



Supervision/Staffing: Supervision is received from a designated official. Functional supervision may be exercised over support staff and students.

Salary: $41,541 to commensurate


Pay Grade: 3A- https://hr.uiowa.edu/pay/plans


Type of Position: Specified Term. Initial appointment is for one year. Appointment may be extended based on performance and availability of funding.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required
  • Must be able to translate, adapt and apply that knowledge to perform beginning level research in a health science field or discipline.
  • Requires animal handling and husbandry experience with ferrets and willingness to work at night and take call when animals are sick.
  • Fine motor skills are required for the gavage feeding of newborn ferrets.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.



Desirable Qualifications

  • 0.5 to two years research experience in following areas:
    • Blood draw
    • Harvesting tissue samples from small animals
    • Performing IF and IHC staining
    • Using microscope, confocal, or bronchoscopy
    • Performing ELISA assay of plasma and stool samples
    • Handling animals for the experiments and animal surgery, performing MCC
