The Capital Planning and Facilities (CPF) mission is to create a physical environment that fosters success. A unit within CPF, Engineering Services provides engineering solutions for IU campuses, our team of licensed engineers and skilled systems designers provides mechanical and electrical engineering services and handles special engineering projects for all IU campuses. Engineering Services also provides technical consulting and support for other divisions within Capital Projects.

Job Summary
Using mechanical engineering design skills, this position prepares construction documents for building renovations and new construction that will be implemented by in-house craft crews or bid to outside contractors.
Department-Specific Responsibilities
Meets with campus facility representatives.
Develops project scope.
Prepares preliminary designs and cost opinions.
Prepares CAD drawings and project specifications.
Assists with project implementation through field observations.
Prepares CAD construction documents (plans and specifications) for mechanical systems by researching and applying current state and federal codes and design standards
Performs field investigations to determine existing conditions prior to design work and field observation of construction by IUB crafts or outside contractors.
Responds to concerns expressed by facility representatives.
Prepares preliminary and final cost opinions by researching vendor information for equipment and materials compatible with IU standards.
Attends trainings to remain current with design and construction practices.
General Responsibilities
Interfaces with users and transfers stated user needs into appropriate designs in coordination with staff.
Analyzes available space, office equipment and layout, and traffic flow; prepares drawings and establishes specifications within budget limits, adhering to pertinent regulations and standard building codes.
Develops itemized project proposals, including cost estimates and budget recommendations, submitting to users for approval; develops competitive bids and specifications as needed.
Coordinates project implementation, engaging staff and/or contractors/vendors as needed.
Monitors project progress and ensures adherence to budget and timelines; assists contractors and craftspeople in resolving problems during installation.
Establishes and maintains contacts with vendors and other manufacturing personnel to evaluate products, to ensure awareness of trends in the design field, and to develop competitive bid specifications.
Maintains design library and serves as an informational resource for customers and staff.

EDUCATION
Required
High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED)
Preferred
Bachelor's degree in design or related field

Working Conditions / Demands
This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
