Department Information



We are seeking a Research Business Administrator to manage, administer, and strategically analyze the day-to-day financial operations for the clinical research portfolio. The Research Business Administrator will help continue our distinguished tradition of excellence in patient care, innovation, and education in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. We are consistently ranked by U.S. News and World Report as a top program nationally and are one of the largest divisions in the country with wide-ranging and reaching clinical and research expertise.



Job Summary



Department-Specific Responsibilities


  • Manages, administers, and strategically analyzes the day-to-day financial operations for the clinical research portfolio.

  • Oversees financial functions including budget creation, sponsor negotiation, contract coordination, and final agreement execution of clinical research contracts.

  • Serves as the Fiscal Officer on all contract and grant accounts.

  • Partners with the University's Office of Clinical Research to ensure compliance with OCR Research Billing practices.

  • Assists in planning and constructing the annual IU budget for clinical trial-funded staff.

  • Reconciles accounts, monitor budgets, forecast expenses, and provide financial reporting and advice to principal investigators and division leadership.

  • Enhances business knowledge among physicians and staff regarding clinical trial processing.

  • Serves as a project manager for departmental and division-level projects, including the implementation of new clinical trial management systems and standard processes.

  • Develops and maintains departmental policies and resources related to clinical research finance.

  • Provides training for department staff managing clinical research studies.

  • Oversees, trains, and supervises the daily work of the Division's (Assistant) Business Manager.

  • Designs and creates financial and operating analyses, including monthly forecasts and long-term plans.

  • Recommends financial courses of action to meet division and departmental objectives.

General Responsibilities

  • Using knowledge and application of accepted procedures and standards, performs detailed financial and administrative tasks related to managing the daily and long-term financial and/or administrative operations of an organizational unit or an academic, research, and teaching department within a school or college.

  • Makes recommendations on policies and guidelines for division/department activities.

  • Controls all expenditures and statement of accounts to ensure regulatory compliance and fiscal integrity.

  • Manages general appropriation, endowment, federal and non-federal grants and contracts, and gift funds.

  • Develops, plans, and makes recommendations on special projects, which may include space allocations, staffing, equipment purchases, and long-range plans.

  • Prepares operating and project budget drafts. Regularly explains financial concepts to non-financial employees.

  • Monitors division/departmental budgets and resolves or recommends resolutions for any significant deviations from approved budgets.

  • May conduct a variety of human resources activities including employment, labor relations, benefits, training, and classification for unit/department.

  • May provide guidance to lower-level employees.

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor's degree in finance, business, or related field

WORK EXPERIENCE



Required



  • 2 years of relevant experience


Preferred



  • 2 years of experience in financial administration, preferably within a research or academic environment

  • Experience in clinical research financial management

  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply concepts and policies to daily work functions.

  • Ability to clearly present material and make it accessible to a variety of audiences.

  • Ability to interpret financial documents from an accounting, policy, and practice perspective.




Working Conditions / Demands



This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

This position is eligible to work a hybrid schedule (mix between remote and in-person work), subject to change in the future based on university policy and business needs.



Advertised Salary



$68,900 - $78,900 per year based on experience and internal equity.
