Postdoctoral Associate at Sanford Burnham Prebys

Posted in Other about 2 hours ago.

Location: San Diego, California

Job Description:

Sanford Burnham Prebys is a preeminent, independent biomedical research institute dedicated to understanding human biology and disease and advancing scientific discoveries to profoundly impact human health.

The duties and responsibilities contained in the job description are intended to be examples of the accountabilities for which the person in the position will demonstrate competency through performance. The job description is not intended to be an all-inclusive list. Duties and responsibilities are subject to change and other duties may be assigned as necessary.

Summary:

Under limited direction, the Postdoctoral Associate (PA) will perform duties as outlined by their supervisor. Being a training position, the PA will support the lab and experiments, while pursuing their own research. The primary research will characterize intracellular trafficking of the transcription factor ATF6 from the cytosol to the nucleus. The PI will use molecular and cellular biology to analyze murine and human liver samples and cell lines, as well as genetically mutant mice with conditional deletion of selective genes by Western blotting, Protein Mass Spec, mRNA sequencing, spatial imaging of ATF6, Bioinformatics for protein and RNA expression, etc. Previous studies discovered that ATF6 traffics to the nucleus in hepatoma cells, but not in normal hepatocytes. In addition, two genes TSP1 and HSP90B1 are required for nuclear trafficking. The individual will identify the roles of proteins encoded by these genes in nuclear trafficking of ATF6 specifically in tumor cell.

Duties and Responsibilities:

List the essential job functions (i.e., actual job duties); describe what must be accomplished; it is not necessary to indicate how it must be done.

  • Demonstrate knowledge and ability to learn to advance projects.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the literature for the unfolded protein response, ATF6, and liver disease required to progress the project forward.
  • Generate hypotheses, design experiments, interpret data, trouble shoot and optimize experiments
  • Be able to analyze and interpret data from different sources and draw relevant conclusions
  • Be able to present results at internal and external meetings
  • Accurately document experiments
  • Be familiar with techniques of gene espression and knock-down using DNA transfer to the liver and cell lines, siRNA, Cas/CRSPR, and viruses (AAV, Lentivirus, etc).
  • Contribute to the writing of reports, manuscripts and grants with increasing responsibility over time
  • Work collaboratively across lab functions and train other junior lab staff as needed
Education and/or Experience:
  • PhD in Biomedical Sciences or Biology.
  • It would be advantageous to have understanding of mammalian physiology and human disease, particularly liver disease.
Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities:
  • Have strong organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Be able to catalogue proteins, antibodies, expression vectors and viruses, cell lines, and mouse lines
  • Excellent data presentation, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Be able to assimilate different large datasets to derive new hypotheses and approaches to test them.
  • Possess strong attention to detail, analytical, time management, and interpersonal skills
Supervisory Responsibilities: This position does not have any formal supervisory responsibilities.

Compensation:

The hiring range for this role is between $68,016 and $75,000.
