Overview

The Center for Health and Wellbeing (CHW) is an interdisciplinary unit within the Princeton University School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA) which fosters research and teaching on the multiple aspects of health and wellbeing in both developed and developing countries. CHW directs undergraduate and graduate academic programs, funds and disseminates original research, creates internship opportunities, hosts visiting collaborators, and organizes a range of health-focused events.

CHW seeks a creative, collaborative, and highly skilled communications professional to serve as the Center’s Communications Manager. This role reports to CHW’s Executive Director and works with CHW leadership and staff to establish communications goals and strategies that advance CHW's identity, reputation, and mission as a leading interdisciplinary center of excellence for health-focused scholarship and teaching.

The incumbent will produce and publish content that aligns with SPIA's and CHW's strategic goals and engages a wide range of audiences and stakeholders. The Communications Manager will manage large-scale communications initiatives such as the Princeton Pulse Podcast, CHW Annual Report, quarterly newsletters, and social media presence and engagement. The Communications Manager will also serve as a resource for faculty, administrative staff, students, and visitors to highlight and promote CHW research and teaching programs, priority activities, research outcomes, and faculty and student achievements.

This position is eligible for a flexible work arrangement of working remotely up to four days per week.



Responsibilities

Independently produce and publish original content that aligns with SPIA's and CHW's strategic goals and engages a wide range of audiences and stakeholders.

  • Develop, write, edit, and publish content for distribution in different formats and platforms including web, digital, social media, and print publications.
  • Produce and publish feature stories, news, newsletters, announcements, and reports that recognize faculty and student achievements, research, and program outcomes.
  • Maintain CHW websites as a dynamic information resource for news, information on programs and personnel, archival retention, and donor stewardship.
  • Coordinate the integration of graphics, photography, video, and other visual materials to enhance the presentation and effectiveness of print and digital communications.
  • Ensure well written, accurate, and consistent messaging and content across communications channels and platforms.
  • Author, review, and edit press releases.
  • Create presentation materials as requested.

Direct communications-related strategic planning and budgeting.

  • Develop and implement communication strategies that convey CHW’s mission and priorities, increase visibility, and expand stakeholder engagement.
  • Prioritize story ideas and develop messaging on major institutional activities.
  • Develop and implement social media strategies to deliver timely reporting on news and important announcements and promote programs, events, and outreach activities to engage broad audiences.
  • Collaborate with the CHW Program Manager and CHW Executive Director to determine costs of activities associated with those strategic priorities; propose communications budget to ensure coverage of associated expenses including equipment & supplies, honoraria, personnel, travel, license fees, and other essential costs; and work to execute communications budget plans over the fiscal year.

Hire and directly supervise communications support personnel.

  • Provide direct day-to-day supervision and guidance to paid workers including graphic designers working on the CHW Annual Report and other publishing projects, audio/video editors working on the Princeton Pulse Podcast and other multimedia projects, and student workers contributing to CHW events or projects as required.

Conduct domestic and international site visits to research and report on CHW research partners, students, faculty, alumni, and other key stakeholders.

  • Prepare for and conduct interviews, videography, and photography.
  • Write articles and create social media posts.
  • Produce communication material for donor reports.

Ensure coordination and collaboration with other university offices.

  • Work collaboratively with CHW colleagues and others including personnel in the Office of Communications, SPIA, Office of International Programs, and the Office of Advancement, among others, to exchange ideas and content, coordinate reporting, and plan and produce events in such a way as to expand CHW’s reach and impact.
  • Serve on campus-wide communications committees and working groups as appropriate and requested.


Qualifications

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and 5+ years of experience in the communications field
  • Experience managing social media platforms to deliver content and messaging
  • Knowledge of print and digital content production and best practices
  • Familiarity with web design and content management systems
  • Strong leadership skills: Models a highly communicative and collaborative leadership style that fosters an environment of trust and reliability among the stakeholder community. Customer focused and proactive. Demonstrates excellent judgment and exercises discretion, personal integrity, and professionalism. Self-motivated with ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proven success in project management. Ability to meet tight deadlines, prioritize, and work on several projects simultaneously.
  • Problem solving skills; ability to respond quickly to changing needs and priorities
  • Attention to detail
  • Proficiency in Microsoft desktop applications (PowerPoint, Word, Excel)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience writing on technical, scientific, or health topics is a plus but not necessary.
  • We are seeking a top-notch communicator who is curious about and skilled at explaining complexity for a general audience.
  • Experience in a University setting
  • Experience hiring and managing freelancers (writers, copy editors, designers, and photographers)
