Job Summary:


Under the direction of a physician, assists in the delivery of healthcare for patients. Performs a wide variety of patient care activities including, but not limited to, maintaining clinical records/documentation, administering medications, giving injections, and taking vital signs.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Patient Care:


    • Maintain vital signs, chief complaints, allergies, and update medication lists.

    • Accurately document patient information in accordance with organizational policies, regulations, and procedures.

    • Observe the general physical condition of patients and notify the nurse/healthcare provider of abnormalities.

    • Take medical histories and record vital signs.



  • Medication Administration:


    • Administer routine oral, rectal, or injectable medications.

    • Understand and apply the principles of safe and accurate medication administration.

    • Follow the 5 rights: right patient, right medication, right dose, right route, right time.

    • Prevent and report medication errors and near misses.

    • Identify and report adverse reactions.

    • Prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician.



  • Routine Patient Testing:


    • Perform and process electrocardiograms.

    • Collect and process blood and urine specimens.



  • Procedure Assistance:


    • Set up rooms and ensure all needed equipment and supplies are in good working order.

    • Clean rooms after procedures and take soiled items to the appropriate location.

    • Stock supplies in assigned rooms at the end of each shift.

    • Clean and disinfect equipment according to established policies and procedures.

    • Prepare patients for tests, procedures, and x-rays.

    • Remove sutures and staples, and change sterile and non-sterile dressings.



  • Clerical Functions:


    • Use patient care scheduling systems.

    • Enter patient-related data into the practice management system.

    • Interpret and input patient orders.



  • Relationship Management:


    • Maintain effective relationships with patients and medical staff.

    • Observe and report the general physical condition of patients to the nurse/healthcare provider.



  • Other Duties:


    • Perform other position-appropriate duties as required in a competent, professional, and courteous manner.




  • Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:


    • Ability to perform multiple tasks in a fast-paced, often stressful environment.

    • Knowledge of principles of aseptic and sterile technique.

    • Familiarity with medical equipment and instruments.

    • Proficiency with computers, keyboard, email programs, and web-based applications.

    • Basic understanding of rules, regulations, and retrieval of insurance information.

    • Problem-solving skills and the ability to recommend solutions.

    • Commitment to service and quality.

    • Occasional to frequent exposure to chemical and/or radiation hazards.
