Nature of Work
The Law Enforcement Cadet position is trainee level law enforcement work for individuals between the ages of 18 and 21.The Cadet will experience various duties and responsibilities performed by sworn personnel in preparation for and anticipation of the Cadet's acceptance and entry into the Harford County Sheriff's Office Law Enforcement Academy. A Cadet who has reached the age of 21 is only eligible to serve in such a position until acceptance and entry into the next available Law Enforcement Academy Class. Employment will be terminated if the Cadet cannot successfully enter and complete the Academy.


The Cadet position has opportunities for overtime, compensatory time, holiday pay and shift differential for evening and midnight shifts.
Examples of Duties

  • Perform administrative functions in a Precinct, Headquarters or assigned Unit.
  • Direct traffic and assist with crowd control and special events.
  • Provide security at various Sheriff's Office facilities.
  • Assist with criminal investigations and crime scene investigations as needed.
  • Assist with Property Unit, Central Records Unit and Animal Control Unit as needed.
  • Provide support to Patrol Operations and Patrol Special Operations Divisions.
  • Provide support to Community Services Division.
  • Communicate through law enforcement radio channels and through computer networks to provide information to Deputies.
  • Provide arrest and warrant information to Deputies.
  • Complete numerous forms, procedural reports and other documents so that the information is concise, legible and accurate.
  • Continually observe surroundings and accurately report unusual conditions.
  • Work a variety of shifts to include weekends and holidays.
  • Work in all forms of weather conditions including extremes of heat and cold, snow, rain and storms.
  • Keep supervisor and relevant others informed of issues in a timely fashion.
  • Cultivate and maintain positive relationships with Agency and other law enforcement agency staff as well as the public.
  • Attend meetings and participate in various teams when needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.




  • Minimum Qualification Requirements

  • High School diploma or G.E.D. certificate recognized by the Maryland State Board of Education.
  • Must be a US citizen with a valid driver's license and no more than three (3) points.
  • Must pass entry-level physical agility test (18 push-ups in 1 minute, 27 sit-ups in 1 minute, 1.5 mile run in less than 15:20).
  • Must pass entry-level written examination.
  • Must successfully complete background investigation process to include polygraph and pre-employment physical.

  • The ability to act as a representative of the Sheriff's Office to the public.
  • The ability to monitor and properly identify, interpret, act and respond to information transmitted over a radio system.
  • The ability to read, comprehend and act on information contained in various forms of written and printed documents.
  • The ability to lift moderate to heavy objects (50-100 lbs.).
  • The ability to work in various weather conditions.
  • The ability to sit for short and extended periods of time in vehicles or other limited spaces.
  • The ability to obtain the thorough knowledge of proper police record practices and procedures.
  • The ability to multi-task and move from one job task to another quickly and easily.
  • The ability to obtain thorough knowledge of NCIC practices and requirements.
  • The ability to establish priorities and organize workload effectively and efficiently to accommodate numerous deadlines.
  • The ability to accurately prepare and maintain detailed records and files and accurately identify threats and trends.
  • The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff; successfully communicate with other staff members, other law enforcement agencies, and members of the public; and work as a team.
  • The ability to maintain a pleasant and productive working atmosphere.
  • The ability to respond properly in emergency situations and complete assignments under pressure.
  • The ability to operate relevant computer systems, including hardware and software, and office machines.

  • Selected Candidate:
  • Must be 18 years of age, but not older than 19 and a U.S. citizen with 10 years of verifiable US residency.
  • Must pass physical agility testing.
  • Must pass entrance level exam with or without reasonable accommodation (min. score 70%).
  • Must pass comprehensive background investigation and criminal record check; medical exam and drug/alcohol screening; polygraph exam; and psychological screening.
  • Must provide handwriting sample for review.
  • Must appear before and receive a favorable recommendation from Oral Interview Board.
  • Visible tattoos are permitted if they are not offensive, indecent, extremist, racist or sexist. No visible tattoos will be permitted on the face or head.
  • Must successfully complete required new hire and annual training programs.
  • Must possess a history and exhibit the characteristics of honesty, reliability, integrity and good interpersonal skills. Any criminal conviction(s) and/or arrest(s) may be grounds for disqualification.
