Position Summary



Basic Function or Purpose of this position: Working independently without direct supervision. Talk directly with customers and national call center to determine appropriate response. To perform a variety of asks to assist in the efficient and reliable operation, maintenance, protection, and appearance of all pipelines, services, hydrants, valves, meter settings and other appurtenances within the distribution system. To discontinue services to the customer's home or establishment by following written or oral instruction.




Position Responsibilities




  • Perform work assigned by supervisor, collects, compiles, and records work data.
  • Locates appropriate valves at customer's home or establishment and turns valves to permit flow or discontinuance of water using various hand tools.
  • investigates customer complaints and completes service orders as required.
  • Inspects valves, hydrants, and pipes to detect defects such as leaks or as requirements by state, federal, or American Water compliance standards.
  • Tighten pipe connections, clamps and couplings to prevent leaks using wrenches and various hand tools.
  • Communicate with customer, supervisory personnel, company dispatcher or national call center as required.
  • Disconnects and connects water meter to outlet and inlet cowlings using assorted hand tools.
  • Uses miscellaneous equipment including but not limited to pry bars, shovels, picks, hand tools, power tools or equipment and valve keys.
  • Backfills, tamps, and installs temporary paving using assorted hand tools, power tools or equipment.
  • Ensures jobsite is secure prior to leaving.
  • Determines appropriate material, pipe sections, valves, and fittings needed to perform assigned work.
  • Drives Company vehicle as required, obtain/maintain D.O.T. certification.
  • Assist with the installation or removal of shoring systems as required.
  • Follows established safety guidelines and procedures.
  • Performs all duties in the classifications within Distribution operations with the exception of heavy equipment operator.

Position Knowledge/Skills



TO DO THIS KIND OF WORK YOU MUST BE ABLE TO:
  • Perform manual labor activities including standing, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling.
  • Work to precise measurements. Understand and use specifications.
  • Lift items weighing 50 to 90 lbs frequently and occasionally over 90 lbs.
  • Carry items weighing 50 to 90 lbs frequently and occasionally over 90 lbs.
  • Perform tightening and loosening activities involving various size bolts frequently.
  • Climb into and out of excavations, vaults and excavations 4 + feet in depth using a ladder.
  • Bending, kneeling, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, feeling, talking, hearing and seeing.
  • Drive company vehicles and operate two-way communication system.
  • Work outdoors in all kinds of weather. Work and drive in a dark environment
  • Follow all established safety guidelines and procedures.
  • Be a self-starter and able to manage time efficiently.


COMPUTER SKILLS:
  • Ability to keyboard and operate tough book computer.


MATH SKILLS:
  • Requires mathematical development sufficient to be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide all units of measure.


LANGUAGE SKILLS:
  • Must have developed language skills to the point to be able to read at least at a minimum level. Write legibly.
  • Speak clearly and distinctly with appropriate pauses, emphasis and correct pronunciation.
  • Must be able to communicate using two-way radio and other communication equipment.
