Position Summary:

The Vice President, People and Culture serves as the organization’s strategic human resources advisor and business partner to key senior leaders and client groups throughout the organization.


The Vice President contributes to business performance by providing strategic consulting on people strategies, organization design, performance management, compensation, governmental compliance, organizational culture, and employee engagement. The Vice President will anticipate and optimize the organization’s people needs to align with the overall business strategy.



Partners with Chief People and Culture Officer to ensure scalable evolution of People and Culture (P&C) functions within diverse dynamic organization. The Vice President is expected to champion and implement strategies that nurture an inclusive, healthy work culture while upholding organizational values and leads team of eight direct reports.

Reporting to the Chief People and Culture Officer and serving as Deputy to the department, this position will serve as a standing member of Audubon’s Senior Leadership Team and People and Culture Leadership Team and be responsible for supervising all areas of P&C.

The Vice President will be hybrid and may be based in Washington, DC or NY, NY with preference for Washington, DC.


Compensation:

Salary range based on geo-differentials:


  • $200,000-$220,000/year = Washington, DC

  • $225,000-$245,000/year = New York, NY


  • Essential Functions:
  • Leads organization-wide efforts to support and sustain a culture reflecting Audubon’s values.

  • Works collaboratively with leaders to design and execute initiatives that promote and measure employee engagement.

  • Leads the development, implementation and execution of programs designed to improve and support employee engagement, retention, employee development and recognition, and the overall employee experience.

  • Directs the planning, development, and implementation of programs to promote inclusive practices.

  • Works collaboratively with colleagues across the organization to develop and implement strategies to retain and support the success of Audubon staff.

  • Plays a key role in managing change processes and organizational restructuring to ensure smooth transitions and minimal disruption.

  • Leads through influence as much as through formal authority in a complex, matrixed organization.

  • Leads integration of equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging (EDIB) values into Audubon’s people and culture policies and partner collaboratively across the organization to actively support policies that elevate EDIB.

  • Ensures professional delivery of P&C services to internal stakeholders.

  • Drives continuous improvement of P&C process and systems to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.

  • Provides ongoing development and overall support to leaders and employees on aspects of organizational effectiveness.

  • Ensures that the organization maintains compliance with all applicable human resources policies, laws, and regulations.

  • Develops, implements, and updates procedures related to human resources policy compliance.

  • Serves as the project lead for key P&C initiatives, including organizational change initiatives, ensuring successful execution.

  • Oversees organization wide Performance Management Program including the implementation of the organization’s competency framework.

  • Mentors and coaches P&C staff to achieve individual high performance, efficiency, and growth opportunities.

  • Provides key leadership towards the strategic design and administration of compensation activities in support of the Audubon’s goals and philosophy, to ensure the organization remains competitive with the market to attract, retain, and motivate current and potential employees.

  • Aligns compensation and rewards programs with pay for performance philosophy, fostering a high-performance culture.


  • Qualifications and Experience:
  • 15+ years of experience progressive Human Resources experience including 5+ years leading a team and managing a department and 5+ years in compensation development, management, and implementation.

  • Bachelor’s Degree required or equivalent experience; Master’s highly preferred. An equivalent combination of education and work experience will also be considered.

  • Demonstrated analytical thinking, problem solving and decision-making skill.

  • Comfort in providing appropriate challenge/pushback and feedback.

  • Familiarity and experience using Workday preferred.

  • Experience in a unionized environment a plus.

  • Ability to successfully manage change and deal with ambiguous situations.

  • Ability to interact with all levels of management in a fast paced, changing environment.

  • Must have outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.

  • Knowledge of federal and state regulations and compliance

  • Demonstrated success in large, geographically distributed NGOs, preferably with an affiliate or chapter structure.

  • Superb interpersonal skills, with a history of forging strong relationships with multiple stakeholders and ability to work collaboratively to build positive and effective partnerships.

  • Collaborative and inclusive leadership style

  • Demonstrated personal and professional commitment to and experience in advancing equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging.

  • Occasional travel required.
