Job Description

The Staff Attorney position will assist the Associate General Counsel in all legal-related matters. At the direction of the Associate General Counsel, this attorney will be responsible for assisting with in-house litigation, reviewing contracts negotiated on behalf of the credit union, conducting legal research, reviewing and drafting pleadings, and legal documents, and all other duties as needed to ensure that the credit union effectively manages legal related matters in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations. The Staff Attorney position provides legal services to the credit union assisting staff at all levels: reviews changes in disclosures, policies, and procedures for legal implications; drafts legal correspondence and documents representing the credit union, and regularly interfaces with external authorities (law enforcement agencies, local government authorities, regulatory and compliance agencies, etc.). Additionally, this position provides assistance in the management of all internal and external litigation matters. The Staff Attorney shares responsibility for training credit union employees on various legal matters, including updates on laws and regulations.

Essential Functions


  • Primarily handles legal services in addition to reviewing legal documents received by the credit union, including but not limited to: Draft and review legal documents, including but not limited to pleadings, motions, discovery requests, legal correspondence, levies, garnishments, and subpoenas. Manages court docket, preparation for trial and hearings, including evidence collection and organizing witness lists and exhibits, including pre and post-judgment activities. Respond to discovery requests, maintain an information database, and report relative to pending litigation matters. Participating in case management and attending legal proceedings. Communicating with business lines and departments as needed to assist in the effective case litigation management for the credit union. Examines legal data to determine the advisability of defending or prosecuting lawsuits on behalf of the credit union. Contact members, attorneys, courts, and other third parties to discuss legal issues and/or communicate on behalf of the credit union. Maintain electronic files, including litigation files, correspondence, discovery, and other materials. Maintains docketing calendar and tickler system for court matters, annual reports, and upcoming deadlines, while monitoring compliance. Electronically file court documents in Colorado and Federal court systems (including county, district, and appellate) Answering general legal inquiries, including escalated inquiries from business lines that require further legal research and/or investigation.

  • Document Review: Review, edit, and produce contracts for the credit union while collaborating with various business units to ensure alignment with outcomes and objectives, administer other legal matters, and communicate as necessary. Reviews credit union documents for legal compliance.

  • Legal Research, Interpretation, and Recommendation: Studies statutes, decisions, and agency regulations and their effects on the credit union. Interprets laws, rulings, and regulations for the credit union. Advises on possible law interpretations, rulings, and regulations relevant to the situation at hand. Conduct legal research including, statutes, relevant case law, legal articles, and various secondary materials. General Legal Research.

  • Collaboration/Professional Development: Maintain relationships with all levels of court personnel, law enforcement & professional affiliations.

  • Bank Secrecy Act: Remains cognizant of and adheres to Ent policies and procedures, and regulations pertaining to the Bank Secrecy Act.

Qualifications

Minimum Formal Qualifications for this Position


  • JD Law degree (Juris Doctor) from an accredited law school.

  • 3+ years' as a practicing attorney in law firm or corporate environment.

  • 3+ years' with a focus in legal collection and related litigation practice areas. Pref

Each year of relevant work experience may be exchanged for a year in a relevant degree program or vice versa. For example, a requirement of a bachelor's degree in accounting and 2+ years of account experience could be substituted for a high school diploma and 6 years of relevant accounting work experience or a master's degree in accounting and 0 years of work experience.

Technical or Specialized Knowledge/Skills:


  • Strong knowledge regarding civil litigation practice.

  • Strong knowledge of Colorado Rules of Civil Procedure and Rules of County Court Civil Procedure.

  • Demonstrates skill of analyzing new regulations and determining the possible impact on the organization.

  • Understanding of the credit union or financial services industry and the products and services of the company.

  • Ability to operate well with all levels of corporate professionals.

  • Able to adjust communication style to match the audience being addressed.

  • Able to explain complex legal concepts and terms in relatable ways to build understanding and acceptance of regulatory changes that may be required.

Certifications Required:
  • Fully licensed to practice law in Colorado (Admission to practice law before the Supreme Court of Colorado, on active status, and in compliance with Continuing Legal Education requirements and Certificate of Good Standing with the Colorado Supreme Court). required

Additional Information

The pay range for this position is: $90,126 to $118,285 per Year (S17)

Final compensation for this position will be determined by various factors such as relevant work experience, specific skills and competencies, education, certifications, and internal pay equity.

This position is eligible for our corporate bonus program based on company performance.
