Purpose of Position

The primary responsibility is to provide guidance to American Indian students pursuing bachelors and graduate nursing degrees. The Nurse Mentor's primary focus is to engage students in retention strategies; provide academic and non-academic support services; collaborate with CNPD faculty and RAIN team members to foster student success and ensure program goals and objectives are met.


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Serve as Nurse Mentor & Advisor to nursing students from diverse & disadvantaged backgrounds


    • Develop rapport with students and create inclusive, welcoming environment

    • Provide an orientation at the beginning of each semester for new and returning students

    • Facilitate student community-building

    • Meet and communicate regularly with students

    • Identify student needs and barriers on an individual basis

    • Connect students to on campus and off campus resources

    • Develop study plans & facilitate individual and group study sessions

    • Provide opportunities for students to learn skills for academic success

    • TEAS, ATI and NCLEX preparation

    • Assist with registering for NCLEX and career placement



  • BSN and graduate academic advising

    • Review degree audit and transcripts each semester

    • Review progression and needs

    • Academic advisement



  • Provide academic & non-academic support services to nursing students

    • Develop a trusting, caring relationship and maintain ongoing student contact and interaction

    • Review academic readiness and possible barriers, develop an Educational Care Plan with students to determine support services needed and assist with those services

    • Provide academic and personal advice/counsel, assist with financial aid applications and all documentation needed to facilitate academic readiness and success

    • Monitor and evaluate student progress, record academic progress and advising notes in the student record system



  • Recruitment of American Indian pre-nursing, nursing & graduate students

    • Answer inquiries from prospective students and their families. Follow up and refer as appropriate

    • Assist with recruitment activities including university tours and presentations

    • Attend conferences, career and health fairs locally, regionally and nationally

    • Establish and maintain professional relationships with internal and external constituents

    • Collaborate with Reservations, Tribal and community colleges, elementary and secondary schools, Indian hospitals and health centers and Tribal governments within North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Minnesota, Nebraska, Wisconsin & Wyoming

    • Assist with and collaborate on the development of program recruitment materials and evaluate effectiveness of recruitment strategies



  • Function as a team member within RAIN, the College of Nursing & Professional Disciplines & the University of North Dakota


Required Competencies

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills

  • Demonstrated leadership skills

  • Experience with data collection & reporting

  • Demonstrated extensive knowledge of American Indian culture/psychosocial behavior


Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing

  • Must be a registered nurse in North Dakota with unencumbered license

  • 1 year Nursing experience

  • 1 year work experience with American Indian people

  • Experience with Microsoft Office programs

  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Nursing

  • Experience in a higher education setting, especially healthcare education or science education

  • Experience working on sponsored funded project objectives
