Position Description:

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Spelman College is seeking a tenure-track or tenured socio-cultural anthropologist at the Advanced Assistant or Associate Professor level to begin in August 2025. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to social justice and anti-racism through their teaching and research. Candidates with evidence of an ongoing research program, teaching effectiveness, and a demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring women and underrepresented students are especially encouraged to apply.We are particularly interested in candidates who have geographical and topical expertise that complements that of faculty members in the Sociology and Anthropology Department. We welcome candidates who do ethnographically grounded work on any of the following topics: urban anthropology, environmental justice, Black ecologies, queer studies, disability studies, digital media studies, political/legal anthropology, visual anthropology, anthropology of public health, global Islamic cultures, and/or critical race studies; and who have geographical expertise in the Caribbean, sub-Saharan Africa, the US or the Middle East/North Africa. We are also interested in candidates who bring methodological expertise in any of the following: digital and spatial humanities, qualitative data analysis, GIS mapping, documentary filmmaking, participatory action research, ethnohistory, or archival research.This position carries a 3:3 teaching load. The candidate must be able to teach core anthropology courses such as Introduction to Cultural Anthropology, Ethnographic Methods, and Anthropological Theory, as well as upper-level Anthropology elective courses in their area of specialization. The candidate will also rotate among department faculty to co-teach the Senior Thesis capstone course, which is a requirement for all majors. The Department of Sociology and Anthropology offers two majors: Sociology, and Sociology and Anthropology, and it has tracks/concentrations in Public Health, Pre-Law/Criminology, and Pre-Medicine. Thus, while the successful candidate will hold a PhD in Anthropology, they must also be comfortable operating at the intersection of sociology and anthropology.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate must have an earned a Ph.D. in Anthropology and have 6 years in an academic institution, with experience in teaching, portfolio of research and record of service.
