Building Services provide full maintenance and repair services for all UNC facilities and ensure the proper operation of those facilities in support of the UNC mission of teaching, research and public service. Building Services supports more than 400 campus buildings with approximately 18 million gross square feet of space. The teams that provide quality maintenance, repair and construction services that support the teaching, research, and public service mission of the University include Campus Maintenance, EMCS, Facilities Operations Support, Housing Support, HVAC Systems, Life Safety Services, and the Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling. Campus Maintenance operates, maintains and improves the physical environment of the University through a complete line of shop services that include carpentry, electrical, plumbing, masonry, insulation, preventive maintenance and special laboratory equipment repair.
A SIGN-ON BONUS OF $4,081 IS AVAILABLE FOR THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT OF THIS POSITION PAID IN 2 INSTALLMENTS WITHIN 12 MONTHS OF HIRE:
$2,040.50 WITHIN 30 DAYS OF HIRE DATE & $2,040.50 12 MONTHS AFTER HIRE DATE.
This position is in Housing Support, 2nd Shift. This position performs multi-trade duties such as plumbing, electrical and basic carpentry and has daily contact with Department of Housing and Residential Education and Housing Support staff and has responsibility for doing a great deal of planning to ensure minimal impact on students and staff while performing maintenance work. A balanced work load will include preventive maintenance in common areas and mechanical spaces as well as responding to urgent and emergency service order needs in resident areas. This would include general maintenance on external building lighting, entrances (ceiling tiles, lighting, water fountains and hallways).
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Demonstrated working knowledge of the methods, practices, tools, and materials used in industrial, commercial maintenance and repair. Ability to plan, problem-solve and work safely. Demonstrated teamwork and communication skills with both fellow employees and Housing staff.
Ability to serve as a mandatory employee and report to work in support of essential (mandatory) University operations, even when adverse weather or other emergency conditions may require the University to close.
Valid NC Driver's License or ability to obtain one prior to start date.
Journey level experience in one major building trade (carpentry, electrical, plumbing) with additional experience in a second building trade.
Computer experience utilizing Microsoft Office a plus.
Ability to stand for extended periods of time; navigate stairs and ascend/descend ladders; work in small tight spaces and bend, stoop, and crawl to complete work. Ability to move objects weighing up to 50 lbs. with or without reasonable accommodation; work in stressful conditions and under critical timelines; and work with small hand tools.

**ELIGIBILITY FOR SIGN-ON BONUS

To be eligible for a Sign-on bonus, an individual must not have worked in a probationary, permanent, or time-limited appointment in the last 12 months as an employee in North Carolina state government, including without limitation the judicial system, state executive branch agencies, and the university system.
A newly hired permanent full time or permanent part-time (more than 20 hours a week) employee are eligible for a sign-on bonus (this will be prorated for employees working more than 20 hours and less than 40 hours per week).
