Job Summary

As an Associate Underwriter, you will play a key role in making sound underwriting decisions that support our mission to align coverage with individual risk profiles. You will work independently to assess benefit increase options from existing policies, applying your analytical skills and knowledge of financial and non-medical risk factors to determine policy eligibility. Strong communication and relationship-building skills are essential as you collaborate with field personnel, producers, and Home Office staff to ensure high levels of customer service.

  • 95% of your time will be spent independently underwriting cases, applying guidelines and state insurance statutes to evaluate risks.
  • 5% of your time will involve serving as a subject matter expert, contributing to interdepartmental problem-solving and project teams.

Skills and Background You’ll Need

  • Must-Haves:

    • High School Diploma or Equivalent
    • 2+ years of insurance background in case management/disability or underwriting experience in financial industry.

  • Preferred:

    • Familiarity with medical underwriting information.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills with a focus on customer service.
    • Strong critical thinking skills and attention to detail.
    • Proven ability to make independent decisions and negotiate effectively.

  • Location/Remote:

    • This position is remote, but candidates must be local to Portland, Oregon as occasional travel to the Portland office required (Fewer than 10x annually)

Please note - the salary range for this role is listed below. In addition to salary, our package includes incentive plan participation and comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, vision and retirement benefits, as well as an initial PTO accrual of 164 hours per year. Employees also receive 11 paid holidays and 2 wellness days per year.

  • Eligibility to participate in an incentive program is subject to the rules governing the program and plan. Any award depends on various factors, including individual and organizational performance.

Salary Range:

24.28 - 35.70
