Job Description:

Primary Purpose of the Role

This position facilitates and coordinates auditing, certification, forestry, and sustainability activities across the company, driven by customer requirements that facilities conform to various manufacturing and quality standards as well as social compliance and forestry expectations. The Environmental, Social, and Governance Specialist will act as a liaison between our production entities and the Corporate Compliance group to assure that we conform to all standards, policies, sustainability initiatives, certifications and execute well during externally conducted audits. They will work closely with HGI locations to standardize approaches, documentation, initiatives, training and certification maintenance.

Essential Job Duties

Audit & Compliance


  • Facilitate and participate in all compliance/certification audits (SQF, SFI, FSC, PEFC, CTPAT, FLA, Sedex, SMETA, social and 3rd party audits requested by customers).
  • Audit each HGI location annually against the certifications held to ensure success in formal audits conducted by outside parties.
  • Stay current on audit requirements published by certifying organizations and understand impacts of changes on HGI's internal practices.
  • Publish audit results and action plans to close gaps identified.
  • Assist sites in developing and executing corrective action plans based on audit results.
  • Participate as needed in supplier evaluations.

Quality Management System (QMS) Development

  • Assess, develop, or implement necessary Quality Management System (QMS) elements to support the overall ESG program.
  • Work closely with all HGI sites to standardize policies, security procedures, processes, and documentation to meet audit requirements.

Certifications & Training

  • Act as HGI's subject matter expert on certifications, both those held and those that might be needed in the future.
  • Train HGI employees on certifications and requirements (CTPAT, Forestry, etc.) as needed.

ESG Program Development & Strategy

  • Strong knowledge of ESG reporting standards (SASB, GRI, TCFD, CSRD) and global regulations.
  • Strong knowledge and experience in ESG calculations (carbon emissions of Scope 1, 2, and 3, energy intensity, renewable energy use, water usage and efficiency, waste management, Return on Sustainability Investment (ROSI)).
  • Support the development of the ESG team practice from go-to-market activities to delivery methodology standards, toolkit development, and team development.
  • Support Corporate ESG program initiatives and goals.
  • Develop SMART sustainability initiatives to drive corporate citizenship.
  • Drive sustainability goals to push HGI in the marketplace to a higher caliber.
  • Develop a short-term and long-term sustainability strategy in line with selected strategic goals.
  • Build, develop, and annually publish the Corporate Citizenship report.

Project & Calendar Management

  • Establish and publish calendars for all work related to preparations for audits and actual audits.
  • Assist resources in preparing for audit events.

Compliance & Legislative Tracking

  • Track and maintain extended producer responsibilities required for compliance.
  • Monitor and comply with legislation that affects sustainability or social compliance.

Required Skills/Abilities



  • Audit & Compliance : Proven experience with compliance/certification audits (SQF, SFI, FSC, PEFC, CTPAT, etc.) and corrective action planning.

  • QMS Development : Skilled in assessing, developing, and implementing Quality Management Systems (QMS) for ESG programs.

  • ESG Knowledge : Expertise in ESG reporting standards (SASB, GRI, TCFD, CSRD) and proficiency in calculating carbon emissions, energy intensity, and waste management.

  • Sustainability Strategy : Demonstrated ability to develop and execute sustainability initiatives and strategies.

  • Certifications Expertise : In-depth knowledge of industry certifications with the ability to stay updated on changes.

  • Training & Team Development : Experienced in training employees on certifications and supporting the development of ESG teams.

  • Corporate ESG Management : Competent in managing corporate ESG initiatives, publishing reports, and ensuring compliance with relevant legislation.

  • Process Standardization : Skilled in standardizing policies, procedures, and documentation across multiple locations.

  • Social Compliance : Previous experience in a social compliance role.

  • Forestry Certification : Previous experience with forestry certification.

  • Communication : Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage all levels of the organization and external customers.

  • Active Listening & Follow-Up : Demonstrates good active listening and follow-up skills.

  • Problem Solving & Decision-Making : Proficient in formal problem-solving methods, exercising sound judgment and professionalism.

  • Independence & Self-Direction : Ability to work independently and self-manage tasks.

  • Lean Manufacturing : Ability to recognize waste and identify improvement opportunities in a lean manufacturing environment.

  • Technical Proficiency : Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Industry Knowledge : Experience in the paper or film converting or printing industry is a plus
  • Minimum Bachelor's Degree and 3 years in related field with a strong commitment to quality

Travel Requirements

  • Travel to facility sites will be required for internal and external audits. Travel for preparation of programs.
