Job Description:

The next generation of cancer therapies will aim to prevent cancer. This position is in the lab of Professor Sanju Sinha at the Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute in San Diego. The lab is using existing methods machine learning techniques at the intersection of aging and cancer to discover new preventative therapies.

We need the world's best minds to solve this problem. If the challenge of using existing methods preventative therapies by understanding the interplay between aging and cancer excites you and you possess strong machine learning skills, we believe you could make an enormous contribution.

The candidate will perform tasks to support a research project to discover the target of small molecules using machine learning techniques and biomedicine data. It may involve non-deep and deep machine learning techniques and employing high-performance computing.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Using existing methods, employing state-of-the-art computational tools (software packages, statistical applications or data mining techniques) to analyze or manipulate bioinformatics data.
  • Develop or maintain applications that process biologically based data into searchable databases for purposes of analysis, calculation, or presentation.
  • Collaborate with researchers, information technology staff, and consortium partners to determine needs, programming requirements, assistance with database-related research activities and present research findings clearly to both computational scientists and biologists.
  • Develop and maintain collaborations with other labs worldwide.
  • Participate in the preparation of reports or scientific publications.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned to meet the needs of the Institute.

Education and/or Experience:

  • A Bachelor's degree in computer science, computational biology, or directly related field.
  • Experience or ability to develop or apply data mining and machine learning algorithms.
  • Experience with handling, analyzing, and interpreting big data is strongly preferred.
  • A proven track record in machine learning using non-deep or deep learning techniques, including designing new architectures, hands-on experimentation, analysis, and visualization.

Other Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities:

  • Effective communication and presentation skills for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to collaborate well with team members.
  • Extend existing software programs, web-based interactive tools, or database queries as sequence management and analysis needs evolve.
  • Strong knowledge of linear algebra, calculus, and statistics.
  • Write computer programs or scripts to be used in querying databases.
  • Microsoft Office suite, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Teams, SharePoint.

Compensation:

  • The expected hiring range for this position is $36,920.00/year commensurate with experience.
