In this role, the Senior Learning Designer applies a systems approach to instructional design
and development and creates and delivers effective learning solutions for targeted audiences
within or across functional areas of Independence. This role collaborates closely with business
partners and other learning specialists to develop learning solutions that support enhanced job
performance and increased productivity.
Instructional design, development and delivery (50%)
Needs analysis
‒ Assess job role needs and performance gaps.
‒ Work with key stakeholders to understand skill/behavior gaps.
Devise and propose effective learning strategies and solutions that include classroom
and virtual instructor-led training, eLearning, microlearning, and blended learning.
Define learning/performance objectives and create content outlines, curriculum plans,
and other design documents to guide the development of learning content and
evaluations.
Follow Independence University design/development standards to create engaging,
high-quality learning materials and compelling learning content that enhance the
retention of learning, including participant guides, instructor guides, presentation files,
handouts, job aids, videos, audio files, and other learning objects.
Logically organize complex information.
Design, develop, and customize learning content; repurpose existing content into new
learning solutions.
Design and develop learning activities and sustainers, knowledge checks, and pre/post
assessments that enhance the learning process.
Create and use high-impact instructional graphics.
Create assessments for reinforcement, including situational and scenario-based
questions.
Use authoring tools to create eLearning courses, microlearning modules, simulations,
video, audio, and animation.
Curate and incorporate available learning resources (e.g., reference materials, electronic
books and documents) into blended learning solutions.
Maintain, update, and store existing curriculum and course materials in a central
repository.
Manage review/approval processes, including SME and quality reviews.
Conduct train-the-trainer activities.
Evaluation
‒ Create and implement Level 1 (reaction), Level 2 (learning), and Level 3
(behavior) evaluations.
‒ Report data to the Learning Manager and make recommendations for changes 23
and enhancements to learning programs.
Project management (25%)
Manage multiple medium- to large-scale projects simultaneously.
Estimate time and resources necessary to develop and deliver learning solutions.
Develop and document project schedules.
Assume a lead role with multiple designers working on common design-related
goal/projects; distribute and supervise development work among other Learning Design
Specialists as needed.
Monitor and communicate status of work in progress; alert stakeholders to potential risks
and conflicts.
Achieve project milestones/end results.
Consultation and coaching (25%)
Accept responsibilities as needed in defining process and standards.
Contribute expertise to learning design and development efforts within the business area
and/or across the learning organization.
Build collaborative relationships with peers and business partners.
Serve as a coach and mentor to other Learning Design Specialists.
Interview process may include a live mock training.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge and skill requirements
Comprehensive knowledge of instructional design methodology (ADDIE) and best
practices, adult learning theory, and organizational behavior.
Strong diagnostic, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Superior written and oral communication skills, including instructional, facilitation, and
presentation skills.
Ability to build and manage relationships and portray credibility by following through on
commitments.
Advanced proficiency in office productivity (Microsoft Office), course authoring (Articulate
360), multimedia development (Adobe Creative Suite), and virtual presentation
(Skype for Business) tools.
Extensive knowledge of Independence business systems, processes, policies,
procedures, and products.
Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage and execute multiple
projects independently.
Experience and education guidelines
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Learning and Development, Instructional
Design, Business, or Human Resources.
A minimum of five years of experience developing instructor-led, eLearning, and blended
learning solutions.
Must have an Android or iOS device which is compatible with the free Microsoft Authenticator app.
Independence has implemented a “Hybrid” model which consists of Associates working in the office 3 days a week (Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday) and remotely 2 days a week (Monday & Friday). This role is designated as a role that fits into the “Hybrid” model. While associates may work remotely on our designated remote days, the work must be performed in the Tri-State Area of Delaware, New Jersey or Pennsylvania
