Job Description:

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs specimen collection procedures, including venipuncture or skin puncture, following laboratory protocols for specimen handling, containers, transport and patient preparation. Verifies information regarding test requested and patient identification according to laboratory protocol.

Coordinates the provision of phlebotomy services for outreach nursing home clients. Performs clerical work which includes registration and processing of requisitions/orders for outreach clients. May provide services at JMH lab and on inpatient nursing units of Hospital as needed.

Performs clerical work including the following: charging, crediting, and canceling of test procedures via computer system in a timely manner. Coordinated registration and order entry for all outreach patient specimens received in the laboratory, following laboratory protocol.

Processes requisitions for disposition of reports to lab files, outreach clients, physician offices, home health agencies, and other appropriate locations. Provides appropriate services to meet the needs of the department’s customer as requested including, but not limited to, the provision of accurate and timely information, resolution of common problems, communication to all necessary parties.

Utilizes the hospital computer System(s) and the outreach computer system(s), printers, scanners, etc. for orders/requisitions from multiple referral sources; coordinates orders/requisitions according to the time requested and location, following all laboratory procedures. Troubleshoots and makes best practice recommendations.

Provides guidance for customers as it relates to laboratory procedures and operations. Provides timely and effective customer service; notifies supervisor of customer service issues.

Promotes positive relations with co-workers by: using positive communication methods; demonstrating commitment to the Mission and Values of the Hospital; striving to improve the image of JMH and demonstrating a commitment to customer service and continuous quality improvement.

Evaluates current practice and makes appropriate suggestions to improve productivity and enhance expense reduction to laboratory management; assists in the evaluation of new equipment; monitors the purchasing of laboratory supplies and inventory control.

Provides technical guidance for employees and customers as it relates to laboratory procedures and operations. Acts as a liaison for JMH to build relationships with key stakeholders at host sites.

Attends meetings inside and outside of the hospital as designated. Integrates into the operations of outreach nursing home clients. Participates in professional activities and continuing education to maintain professional expertise.

Clearly communicates and continuously supports the Mission and Values of Johnson Memorial Health.

Conducts all activities in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, standards, departmental and hospital policies and procedures including Blood and Body Substance Precautions, Plans for Hazardous Materials, Blood Borne Pathogens, Fire Safety and Disaster Plans.

Participates in Quality Improvement/Quality Assurance activities as determined by the Hospital including Hospital operations improvement.

Performs additional duties as required which relate to the function of the hospital.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

High School Diploma or equivalent required; course work in Phlebotomy required. Certified Phlebotomist (ASCP, AMT, NCA, ASPT) or Medical Assistant and/or minimum of one year experience required. Experience with office equipment and medical terminology required. Current Indiana driver’s license required. Must have reliable personal automobile for use when traveling to off-site facilities.

SCHEDULE:


Monday - Friday 5:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. (may be flexible based on workload); one Saturday a month 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.; and one holiday per year
80 hours per bi-weekly pay period.
