GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:



Research Technician (Photodynamic Therapy/Imaging/Microbiology Research)



A paid research technician position is available in Dr. Tayyaba Hasan's lab at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, focusing on photo-diagnosis and photo-chemotherapy against infectious diseases, particularly sepsis. This multidisciplinary role offers hands-on experience in microbiology, photochemistry, biophysics, and imaging, with opportunities to work with animal models (in vivo and in vitro) and potentially clinical samples. Familiarity with MATLAB coding, biomedical software, and computer-related skills is desirable, as is experience in animal handling. The lab publishes ~20 papers annually, offering potential authorship opportunities for significant contributions. Research technicians will acquire a variety of skills, as well as a greater understanding of how the industry of science operates. In exchange, the research technician will aid in all the processes necessary to keep the lab efficient and productive; this includes scientific, technical, and administrative tasks.


This is an ideal position for students between college graduation and the start of graduate or medical school. Candidates must be energetic and enthusiastic about lab work and be flexible in working with different investigators on various projects. The position will require:



1. Working knowledge of pipetting and general laboratory techniques


2. Desire to learn a large number of microbiological, chemical, and optical techniques


3. Active participation in weekly group seminar and other meetings


4. Extremely strong written and communication skills


5. Previous research experience, wet lab work preferred.


6. Knowledge of image/data processing is desirable


7. Animal handling that will involve sacrificing subjects humanely


8. Clinical interface is desired


9. Ability to collaborate well with others.


10. Adherence to all MGH vaccination, safety requirements and protocol procedures



PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:



Please note, the functions below are representative of major duties that are typically associated with these positions. Specific responsibilities may vary based upon departmental needs. Similarly, not all duties that have been outlined will be assigned to each position.


  • Prepares basic solutions and performs base-level procedures as assigned (i.e. - pipetting, cell and tissue culture, etc.)

  • Maintains laboratory notebook

  • Understands and applies basic scientific techniques

  • Conducts analysis of results and may begin interpretation of results

  • Sets up and prepares routine experiments as directed

  • Prepares lab reagents, chemicals, instruments and equipment

  • May perform independent literature searches

  • Assists with organizing materials for publication or presentation

  • Maintains and orders supplies

A Research Technician II performs the duties of a Research Technician I (above) and may also:

  • Execute protocols of non-routine experiments

  • Assist the PI(s) with determining the most suitable methodology

  • Perform basic design and modification of protocols

  • Calculate, transcribe and analyze data

  • Prepare and present reports

  • Organize and summarize acquired data, using scientific and statistical techniques.

  • Organize and/or draft material for the preparation of research papers, manuscripts and other documents for publication and/or presentation.

  • Participate in the design of experiments or field work.

  • Train others

SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

  • Ability to work independently and as a team member

  • Good communication skills

  • Computer literacy

  • Working knowledge of clinical research protocols

  • Ability to perform multiple tasks independently

The Research Technician II should also possess:

  • Analytical skills and the ability to resolve technical problems

  • Ability to interpret acceptability of data results

  • Working knowledge of data management programs

  • Demonstrated competence in research techniques and methodologies






Qualifications

EDUCATION:



  • Bachelor's degree required.





EXPERIENCE:



  • New graduates with some lab experience (via course work, internships, etc.) or those without any prior research experience will be considered for the Research Technician I position outlined above.

  • Those with a minimum of 1 year of directly related work experience will be considered for a Research Technician II position.




SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY (if applicable):

  • A Research Technician II may serve as a team leader to lab assistants and Research Technician I's.




ADDITIONAL INFO:




Potential Start Date: January 2025 onwards (negotiable, early join possible)



Minimum Commitment expected: 2 Years (all MGH positions are employment at will - no contract is implied)



Location: on site at Mass General in a research building: currently 40 Blossom St Boston.
