Position Title: Principal Engineer

Reports To: Engineering Manager

Position Summary:

Federal Equipment Company has been a leading supplier for marine deck machinery and specialized weapons and material handling systems. Through the years the company has emerged into an internationally recognized organization with extensive expertise in marine design/engineering and manufacturing of critical shipboard systems. The company, now part of Fairbanks Morse Defense, is rapidly growing and in need of a Principal Engineer. This position performs complex analytical work in providing office and engineering support and field engineering support for environmental and programs ensuring technical competence and compliance with all current codes and criteria.

Essential Job Functions:


  • Determines work procedures, prepares work schedules and expedites workflow.
  • Issues written and oral instructions.
  • Assigns duties and examines work for exactness, neatness and conformance to policies and procedures.
  • Studies and standardizes procedures to improve efficiency of subordinates.
  • Maintains harmony among workers and resolves grievances.
  • Prepares composite reports from individual reports of subordinates.
  • Adjusts errors and resolves complaints.
  • Prepares and documents budget requests; administers adopted budget in department.
  • Assists subordinates in performing duties, as needed.
  • Reviews private project development plans for compliance with codes, regulations and standards, adequacy of applications for permits and compliance with approved plans.
  • Coordinates the preparation of or develops engineering plans and specifications, coordinates required advertising for bids, reviews construction bids and makes necessary recommendations based on lowest and best bids, competency of vendors and consultants and the selection criteria.
  • Oversees assigned projects to ensure contractor compliance with time and budget parameters for the project.
  • Prepares and administers the department budget in assigned area of responsibility.
  • Maintains the engineering library and infrastructure records.
  • Assures as-built records of projects and documents necessary changes for the operation and maintenance programs.
  • Responds to public or other inquiries relative to engineering procedures on specific projects and other information.
  • Reviews utility permits, street use permits, franchise utility permits, etc.
  • Maintains regular contact with consulting engineers, construction project engineers, city, county, state and federal agencies, professional and technical groups and the public regarding division activities and services.
  • Performs related duties or responsibilities, as assigned, or requested

Qualifications, Skills and Educational Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in the relevant engineering field (Master's degree preferable).
  • 3-5 years of engineering experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Experience leading or supervising a team.
  • Able to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Works well in a fast-faced environment with minimal day-to-day supervision
  • Highly skills in Excel, Word, PowerPoint
  • Able to comprehend blueprints and drawings

  • Strong work ethic with the ability to maintain a positive attitude in a fast-paced, growth environment.
  • Proven ability to establish effective working relationships at all levels.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, quantitative, and problem-solving skills. Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Note: This position requires access or potential access to Unclassified Naval Nuclear Propulsion Information, which is Not Releasable to Foreign Nationals (NOFORN) data. Therefore, to meet NOFORN requirement, you will have to provide proof of US Citizenship and attest that you do not have dual citizenship.
