Job Summary

The Wireless Research group within InterDigital's Research and Innovation (R&I) organization is responsible for leading InterDigital's next generation wireless research projects. Our charter is to identify future technology needs, develop and learn from proof-of-concept prototypes, and innovate around a system focus. Today, our team is at the leading edge of 6G research.

Responsibilities:

We are seeking a highly motivated wireless system and networking research engineer to work in our team to analyze, design, and implement next generation 6G mobile networks and devices. These intelligent networks self-optimize to deliver advanced services to users and devices that are tailored to content, context, and connectivity. The selected candidate will have a depth of experience in networking research, innovation, wireless standards (e.g., 3GPP), and simulation/prototyping. This role requires close interaction across teams within the Wireless Lab, presenting work internally, and drafting documents for external contributions, presentations, and research papers. Research topics include areas, such as: Distributed & Decentralized Networking, Security and Trust, Converged Computing and Communications, Edge Computing, and AI-enabled Networking & Services.


  • Work in a team to develop innovative networking protocols, services, and solutions for future 6G distributed communications and computing systems and devices.

  • Responsible for researching various innovation topics, documenting work which may include design & protocol descriptions, block diagrams, sequence diagrams, source code, test procedures, and simulation results.

  • Design, implement, and test novel wireless network solutions, simulations, protocol software, and applications.

  • Review, analyze, and author research publications, networking standards, and standards contributions including 3GPP, ETSI, IEEE, IETF, etc. - individually and in team settings.

Experience and Requirements:


  • PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Information & Communication Engineering or related fields.

  • 15+ years of work experience post Ph.D. in the field of wireless communications

  • Expert Knowledge in wireless 4G/5G/6G system architecture and protocols (3GPP SA, 3GPP RAN, etc.)

  • Expert Knowledge in networking concepts and protocols (e.g., IP, TCP, ICN, etc.)

  • Expertise in long-term fundamental wireless networking innovation and standards-focused research.

  • Expert Knowledge wireless simulation and prototypes.

  • Programming experience in one or more of the following: Python, C/C++, MATLAB, NS3

  • 3GPP standardization knowledge, including authoring contributions in SA and RAN working groups.

  • Experienced with patent creation, including being a lead inventor on patent applications.

  • Publications in top conferences and journals.

  • Willing to take on challenges in a fast paced and high-pressure environment.

  • Strong analytical and research skills along with a proven innovation record of accomplishment

  • Ability to thrive in an innovative, dynamic, and research-oriented work environment.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including strong presentation skills.
