The Nebraska State Historical Society (NSHS) is seeking a motivated and skilled professional to join the team as an Exhibits Fabrication Coordinator (full-time permanent). This teammate will work as part of a dedicated team of museum professionals, producing thoughtful and captivating permanent and rotating exhibits. The candidate will possess a strong background in one of the following fields: exhibit fabricator, cabinet maker, finish carpenter or custom display builder. NSHS is Nebraska's statewide historical agency, funded by taxpayers and donors, and serving the public through its library and research center, conservation facility, historic sites, museums and state archeology and historic preservation offices

Job Duties: Fabricate high-quality exhibit cases, displays and exhibit furniture using wood, plastic and metal with repeatable and precise results, ensuring long-lasting exhibit pieces that meet specific standards, Oddy testing standards, etc. Design and document production, fabricate jigs, creating processes for production of modular exhibit caseworks. Willingness to learn laser cutting of acrylic, as well as heating and bending of acrylic, producing finely-crafted display pieces. Utilize skillsets and best practices in carpentry including, but not limited to: joinery, routing, finishing, and related skills. Learn state procurement regulations and institute system of material procurement. Other duties may be assigned, including but not limited to: assisting in customer service tasks, taking part in exhibits meetings and conceptual phases, being an active participant in museum team, events and the workplace culture. All other duties assigned within the scope of the classification.



Requirements / Qualifications:




Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in history, art, architecture, graphic design, interior design, anthropology or museum studies, plus three years experience in exhibition development, design and coordination.



Preferred Qualifications:10 years experience relating to carpentry, cabinet-making, display/exhibit fabrication or finish carpentry, or, related field. Experience in CNC routing, laser cutting, welding and metalwork.



Other: Regular and Reliable attendance is required. This position requires travel. As such, the incumbent must be able to present a valid driver's license or another form of reliable transportation.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Expert-Level knowledge and practice of carpentry and/or cabinet fabrication Prolonged standing and ability to lift 50 lbs.; work with proper ear/eye protection. Willingness to learn and apply OSHA standards and other safety policies. Excellent problem-solving skills, including the ability to establish priorities and make decisions independently. Willingness to learn laser-cutting and CNC table routing. Effective interpersonal skills, as well as written and oral communication skills. Must be committed to the agency's values and demonstrate them regularly in their work.


Portfolio of previous work will be requested for review, if selected for interview. Practical demonstration of skills may be requested.


Excellent customer service, phone, and email correspondence skills; detail-oriented, organized, ability to multi-task, work under minimal supervision, and be self-motivated. Interacts and maintains a close working relationship with diverse individuals. Act in accordance to the program/administrative policies and directives. Work professionally with the public and employees.
