A Day in the Life
Medtronic is looking for a highly motivated individual to support the R&D labs at our Santa Ana, CA facility. As an R&D Lab Operations Engineer, you will develop and maintain state-of-the-art capabilities to support product development teams in efficiently and predictably developing novel therapies for the Structural Heart and Aortic operating unit.
Your responsibilities will include:


  • Developing installation/qualification documentation and procedures for lab equipment. Creating equipment maintenance procedures. Troubleshooting equipment and providing support for engineers and technicians.

  • Creating calibration procedures and supporting calibration activities.

  • Collaborating with engineers for the development and improvement of lab procedures and test methods. Identifying and implementing tools and techniques to improve ease of use and repeatable test method execution.

  • Developing and implementing tools, infrastructure, and automation systems to facilitate smooth lab operations including laboratory information management systems (LIMS), data management and information technology infrastructure, inventory management, and lab hygiene procedures and best practices.

  • Creating specifications/drawings for equipment, fixtures, and accessories

  • Working with suppliers for procurement and maintenance of lab equipment.


  • Following all environmental, health & safety (EHS) rules and procedures. Facilitating collaboration between engineering teams and the EHS function for the implementation and maintenance of lab equipment and facilities.

  • Communicating effectively in cross-functional teams to drive work to completion and resolve issues. Keeping peers and leadership informed of progress and issues.

  • Perform IQ/OQ/validations in support of R&D equipment and labs

  • Support two R&D sites through equipment engineering, goals and functions

  • Make recommendations to the Sr. Manager on equipment and lab modernization

  • Work side by side with two supervisors on best practices, safety and good order and cleanliness of R&D labs

  • Provide recommended financial forecasting regarding lab equipment, modernization and improvements

  • Travel up to 20% per quarter between the two R&D sites

  • Contribute to fostering an environment of collaboration teamwork and diversity

Must Have:


  • Bachelors degree required

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working with laboratory equipment or advanced degree with some training and experience

Nice to Have:


  • U nderstanding of the design principles and operation of lab equipment

  • Working knowledge of basic electro-mechanical systems, fluid dynamics, and test/measurement equipment

  • Hands on experience using test equipment (DMM, oscilloscope, microscopes, high speed cameras, pressure/temperature sensors, data acquisition (DAQ) systems)

  • Has experience creating CAD models and professional engineering drawings (SolidWorks preferred)

  • Has strong organizational/planning, oral communication, and technical skills

  • Is open-minded, self-motivated, collaborative, curious, strategic, hands-on, and can succeed in both collaborative and independent environments

  • Experience in medical device development, or other highly regulated industries is preferred

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):80000-120000

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).
