Job Description:

Purpose

Provide training and direction to all personnel assigned, as it pertains to the proper set-up and running, of production work orders assigned to the CNC Machining work center(s). Furnish all necessary direction to machinists as it may pertain to quality, production paperwork, production goals, safety and housekeeping. Set-up and operate CNC machines.

Essential Functions

This position primarily involves the use of all CNC (Computer Numeric Control) machine shop equipment including 5axis Mill-Turn, Vertical and Horizontal Lathes, and Cylindrical Grinding.


  • By utilizing the personnel assigned to the CNC equipment, further make specific job assignments of personnel to specific machines and equipment to meet the scheduled machining sequence completion dates of parts routed through each.
  • Responsible for utilizing all resources under the group leader's control to keep all machines running as efficiently as possible, and producing a quality part.
  • Notify the Machining Manager if it is determined that there will be a problem in making the previously set schedule
  • Assure that machine operators have been properly set-up to run production parts.
  • Setup jobs on machines as well as operate CNC machines to produce parts to within specific tolerances. Provide any training and/or assistance to achieve the specifications called for on the blueprints.
  • Responsible for the daily routine cleaning and maintenance of machinery
  • Responsible to promptly determine when Maintenance is to be called to resolve a machine problem that cannot be resolved by the operator.
  • Responsible for performing preventive maintenance per the manufacturer's instructions
  • Review and confirm that all personnel are running to predetermined production goals. If production goals are incorrect, either too high or too low, consults with the Machining Manager for possible correction.
  • Responsible for the general housekeeping in all machining processes by instructing personnel to perform the proper daily housekeeping procedures around each machine as well as in the general area(s).
  • Assist the Machining Manager with the individual performance evaluation of any specific individual working under the group leader's direction in the areas of job knowledge/ability, skill, safety, quality, time card errors, and housekeeping.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Machining Manager.

Equipment & Materials

This position involves the use of CNC (Computer Numeric Control) machine shop equipment primarily including 5axis Mill-Turn, Vertical and Horizontal Lathes, and Cylindrical Grinding Machines.

Materials you will be working with range from cast iron housings, heat resistant alloy shafts and electrical steel/aluminum components as well as other various materials we use for fixtures.

Physical Requirements

Job requires standing most of the day. There is no repetitive motion. Since overhead cranes are available in all work areas, Technicians are not required to lift more than 50 pounds.

Environmental / Safety Issues

Normal exposure to coolant liquid, dust and fumes - limited exposure to hazardous materials. Keeps work area clean and free of scrap materials. Follows all safety rules applicable to machine as stated on posted signs and in Company policy.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities


  • Can perform all machining operations within the work center.
  • Can setup any sequence of operations of tools independently.
  • Can determine when it is necessary to have major maintenance performed to return the machine to normal operating condition.
  • Highly proficient at math and an expert at using measuring instruments (micrometers, gauges).
  • Can correctly interpret blueprints and assist other Technicians and alerts Mfg. Engineering of drawings that require attention.
  • Can interpret all operations listed on Traveler documents that move with each job.

Education / Certification

High School or vocational school graduate. 5 to 7 years CNC Machinist experience. Must understand blueprint specifications and quality requirements. Must have supervisory, instruction/training ability and/or experience, as well as the ability to communicate effectively.

Finished Product

Ensures that finished product meets specifications and that it is moved to the next position on the Traveler in a timely manner.

Chain of Command

Reports to Machining Manager. Ensures that the Machining Manager is informed of all progress and problems.
