SUMMARY:

The Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD) educates design, research, and scholarship leaders to make a resilient, just, and beautiful world. The GSD offers degree programs across a range of design disciplines-architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning, urban design, design engineering, and real estate-as well as advanced research programs that cut across these disciplines and a robust public program of lectures, exhibitions, and publications. The immense variety of people, programs, and ideas at the School sustains a vibrant and rich environment for learning, inquiry, and collaboration, unlike any other design school.

Reporting to the Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs, with a dotted line to the Chair of the Department of Landscape Architecture, this position supports and advances faculty appointment and review processes for the Department of Landscape Architecture.

Please note: This is a one-year term appointment with an end date of June 30, 2025, with the possibility of an extension.

Position Description

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assist with highly confidential faculty affairs processes for tenure track, practice faculty, and senior faculty appointments, focusing primarily on case memo preparation for the review, recruitment, and retention of existing and new junior and senior faculty. Attend meetings related to cases as necessary with Chair and with Faculty Affairs staff and faculty members.
  • Coordinate workflow between the Chair and the Faculty Affairs office regarding cases, including timelines, compiling materials for cases, distribution of cases, and calendar for discussions and votes on appointments and promotions.
  • Draft memoranda and other documents related to new external faculty appointments in Landscape Architecture, reviewing, summarizing and synthesizing dossier materials and external evaluations effectively to support appointments and recruitment.
  • Draft memoranda and other documents related to internal reappointment, promotion, and tenure reviews in Landscape Architecture, reviewing, summarizing and synthesizing dossier materials and external evaluations effectively to support reappointments and promotions.
  • As needed, may assist with drafting other correspondence or documents related to review processes for visiting faculty in Landscape Architecture.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

There are no supervisory responsibilities associated with this position.

Basic Qualifications

Candidates MUST meet the following basic qualifications in order to be considered for this role:
  • Minimum of three years related experience in research, writing and/or administration
  • Experience in the design disciplines, knowledge of design education, or experience writing about design and the design disciplines.
  • Strong project management and communication (written and verbal) skills in a deadline-driven environment with competing priorities.


Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Ability to work effectively and with tact and discretion across the organization
  • Ability to handle sensitive/confidential situations diplomatically
  • Proven ability to take initiative and to work collaboratively with a variety of people and departments
  • Prior experience working closely with faculty members and/or in academic affairs or faculty administration in a college or university is strongly preferred.


Working Conditions

This position will be based in Cambridge, MA. The work is mainly performed in an office setting. Flexible work options for this role will be discussed during the interview process.
