Description



  • Accurately processes and accessions all incoming laboratory specimens. Responsible for confirming all required patients and specimen identification information is correctly documented.


  • Primary laboratory liaison between physicians, nursing units, physician offices, patients, general public and laboratory sections via telephone and in person.


  • Provides information regarding test reports, the status of tests in process and clarification of physician orders.


  • Perform all other required reporting, including state and county health department reporting functions of laboratory reports fax and function as primary liaison to incoming customers of the Department of Laboratory Services.


  • Supports the Mission of Trinity Health and Holy Cross Hospital.



Responsibilities:



  • Frequent contact with physicians, nursing, co-worker, hospital staff and patients.


  • Responsible for accurate patient and specimen identification at all times.


  • Must be proficient in specimen processing.


  • Must be able to organize workload, work under pressure and set priorities effectively with minimal supervision.


  • Must follow through quickly and thoroughly when resolving problems.


  • A knowledge of medical laboratory terminology is essential to effectively communicate patient information.


  • Must be able to process specimens in an expeditious manner while assuring all information is correct and specimens reach testing areas immediately after processing.


  • Responsible for centrifugation and other related specimen-handling requirements in addition to specimen distribution to the appropriate departments.


  • Identifies care needs of patients' and family needs and implements interventions and utilizes equipment to meet the specific needs of the patient population served: Neonates, Infants, Pediatrics, Young Adults, Middle Age Adults and Late Adults


  • Interacts with physicians, laboratorians, health care professionals and other professionals regarding patient care issues. Ability to work in stressful situations.


  • Works safely with infectious, hazardous and toxic materials.


    Actively participates in continuing education and maintains current knowledge of hospital, departmental and related external agency technical, administrative, safety and regulatory polices.


  • Responsible for maintaining a safe work environment through the prompt reporting of all safety hazards, safety violations and safety related incidents to appropriate personnel as outlined in departmental and hospital policy.


  • Maintains patient, quality control, quality assurance and other related records.


  • Strictly adheres to all safe work practices to include the consistent use of personal protective equipment and adherence to infection control procedures and policies.


  • Utilizes time, material and equipment resources in an efficient, safe and cost effective manner.


  • Adopts and promotes Services Excellence as part of the daily operations.


  • Performs other related duties as assigned.





What you will need:



  • High School graduate, GED or higher required


  • Formal training and experience as a phlebotomist preferred.


  • Two (2) years experience in a Clinical Laboratory or physician directed laboratory in the area of specimen processing preferred. With demonstrated skills and competence in dealing with people.


  • Individual must possess ability to work independently with minimal reliance on supervisory support.


  • Must be able to effectively manage time and scheduling without direct supervision and demonstrate flexibility and adaptability.


  • Must be able to communicate with patients, physicians, and hospital staff in an effective, courteous and professional manner.


  • Must have the ability to read, write and demonstrate an understanding of the procedures involved in specimen collection and routine testing.


  • Ability to work in harmony with other personnel.


  • Demonstrates basic computer literacy.


  • Demonstrate comprehension, skill and command of the oral and written English language.


  • Ability to transport specimens to the reference laboratories without interfering with the specimen integrity.
