Job Description Chronicle Heritage seeks a motivated Mountaineering Guide and Medic to join our growing team. In this role, you will ensure safe and effective fieldwork in some of our most remote and challenging locations. You'll be able to work closely with our DPAA Team Lead to ensure meticulous planning and mission execution. The ideal candidate should be physically capable, self-motivated, and able to handle confidential information with discretion. Strong collaboration skills with internal and in-country team members are also essential. Hire Type: Hourly, as-needed Schedule: Availability to work full-time, as-needed Location: Onsite: work at project location throughout the United States and for International Projects The Mountaineer/Medic will:
  • Plan and execute safe and efficient mountain expeditions in collaboration with the Team Lead.
  • Work with the Team Lead to conduct risk assessments and ensure adherence to safety protocols.
  • Maintain and inspect climbing equipment and safety gear.
  • Train and lead teams in mountaineering techniques.
  • Coordinate with other field staff to ensure seamless operations in remote locations.
  • Manage and respond to emergencies, including search and rescue operations.
  • Administer first aid and emergency medical care during expeditions.
  • Develop and implement medical protocols for remote fieldwork.
  • Carry out regular health and safety checks for team members.
  • Maintain medical supplies and ensure they are up-to-date and functional.
  • If necessary, train team members in basic medical and first aid procedures.
  • Document and report any medical incidents or injuries.
  • Liaise with medical professionals and emergency services as needed.
Required Qualifications
  • Certification in mountaineering from a recognized institution.
  • 5+ years of technical climbing experience with a proven track record in challenging terrains.
  • 3+ years of professional outdoor guiding experience in diverse environments.
  • Current Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification or higher, with ongoing recertification as required.
  • 3+ years of progressive experience in backpacking and navigating remote, rugged settings.
  • Proven ability to manage and lead teams in high-altitude and adverse conditions.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Strong physical fitness and endurance, with the ability to handle demanding and physically strenuous conditions, hiking and backpacking up to 8 hours a day.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and collaborate with other field professionals.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to changing conditions and unexpected challenges.
  • Commitment to safety and adherence to best practices in mountaineering and fieldwork.
  • Performance of non-mountaineering or guiding activities to assist with archaeological survey and required fieldwork.
Preferred Skills
  • Advanced technical climbing skills, including ice climbing, rock climbing, and mixed climbing.
  • Expertise in advanced rope systems and technical rescue operations.
  • Certification in advanced wilderness medicine or EMT training,
  • Proficiency in managing complex medical emergencies, such as altitude sickness and trauma.
  • Skilled in navigation using GPS, maps, and compass, with experience in GIS software.
  • Knowledge of local ecosystems, environmental conservation, and Leave No Trace principles.
  • Strong leadership abilities with experience in managing and training teams in high-pressure situations.
  • Cultural competence and experience working with diverse groups and local communities.
  • Familiarity with field equipment maintenance and repair, including climbing gear and communication devices.
  • Experience in planning and managing field projects, including logistics, resource allocation, and risk management.
  • Advanced physical conditioning and endurance training tailored to mountaineering demands.
  • Experience in cultural resource management, archaeology, or a related field.
Physical And Mental Requirements And Work Environment Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical activities over extended periods, including long hikes, climbs, and carrying heavy loads (up to 80 lbs).
  • High level of physical fitness with strength in core, legs, and upper body to handle climbing, lifting, and carrying equipment.
  • Excellent balance and coordination for navigating difficult terrain and performing technical climbing maneuvers.
  • Capability to endure extreme weather conditions such as high winds, cold temperatures, and precipitation.
  • Ability to acclimate to high altitudes and manage physical responses to reduced oxygen levels.
Mental Requirements:
  • Strong ability to quickly assess situations, make decisions under pressure, and adapt to changing conditions.
  • Capacity to remain calm and focused in high-stress situations, including emergencies and challenging conditions.
  • Attention to detail for safety checks, navigation, and ensuring adherence to protocols.
  • Effective leadership skills to guide and motivate teams and clear communication to convey instructions and ensure team cohesion.
  • High level of mental toughness and resilience to cope with isolation, extended periods away from home, and the physical and emotional demands of the job.
  • Work often takes place in remote, rugged, and challenging environments with limited access to amenities and support.
  • Frequent work at high altitudes, which requires acclimatization and can involve risks related to altitude sickness.
  • Potential for long durations away from home base, with extended field assignments and minimal contact with the outside world.
  • Exposure to physical risks inherent in mountaineering, such as rockfall, avalanches, and extreme weather hazards.
  • Collaboration with diverse teams and local guides, requiring strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in a group setting.
