Job Title: Manager - Indirect Tax
Location: Hybrid - Pittsburgh, PA or Latrobe, PA
Job Summary:
This position functions within the overall Tax Department mission of furthering corporate strategic goals, specifically, the management of indirect taxes for North America such as sales and use, real estate, and personal property taxes. This individual will have the responsibility for U.S. and Puerto Rico sales and use tax, Canadian GST/PST, and all U.S. property tax and will also participate in managing related tax examinations, tax planning, and special projects related to indirect taxes.
Key Job Responsibilities:
Oversee the sales and use tax compliance functions, including:
Management of third-party provider (currently SOVOS) who prepares U.S. and Puerto Rico Sales/Use tax returns.
Create monthly Sales/Use tax transaction files that are utilized by SOVOS to prepare the monthly, quarterly, and annual returns
Manage the process and storage of customer exemption certificates.
Provide guidance and assistance to Kennametal Canadian personnel as needed to assure the timely and accurate filing of Canadian GST/PST returns
Lead Sales/Use tax examinations by tax authorities utilizing internal and external resources, including the timely addressing of tax notices and inquiries.
Manage reverse Sales/Use tax audits and Real Estate / Personal Property assessment appeals through the engagement of third-party providers.
Perform daily/weekly review of sales and purchase orders to identify and correct, if necessary, erroneous tax decisions made on transactions.
Review monthly accrual reconciliations prepared by tax department personnel.
Monitor sales and use tax process and resulting customer invoicing to ensure accurate calculation of appropriate tax to customers to maximize customer experience.
Oversee other indirect tax compliance responsibilities (E.g., U.S. Federal Excise tax, U.S. Annual Withholding Tax, and U.S. State annual reports)
Supervise indirect tax personnel and manage service providers performing outsourced indirect tax functions.
Provide guidance and direction to other departments regarding sales & use tax matters (E.g., Customer Service Representatives (CSR's), Accounts Payable, and Sourcing)
Monitor and analyze relevant tax legislative and regulatory developments and communicate their impact to key tax stakeholders.
Support the various other interests of Kennametal's tax function through:
Support of the Direct Tax compliance function as needed.
Mentoring and teaching other Kennametal tax personnel
Assisting with implementation of new tax policies, strategies, and procedures and other cross-functional initiatives as appropriate, and supporting proper design, operation, and maintenance of internal controls.
General system maintenance support (SAP, Sovos, Vertex, etc.)
Education, Work Experience, Skills, Certificates
8-10 years of relevant work experience
Bachelor's degree
Must be proficient with Microsoft Excel.
Strong PC skills and experience using sales tax software applications (preferably Sovos) and tax research software.
Strong SAP ERP skills and experience is preferred.
Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
Previous managerial and supervisory experience is preferred.
