Job Title: Manager, Instructional Design and Training

Department: Engineering

Salary: Approximately $135K - $145K

Location: Remote

Purpose: Come build mission-critical carrier and public safety training solutions with Comtech! We are seeking a passionate, detail-oriented, resourceful, and experienced Manager of Instructional Design and Training to lead the growth and success of our customer and internal compliance training programs.

Leverage your knowledge of instructional design (ID), training delivery and program management best practices to ensure that our telco customers, 9-1-1 authorities, Emergency Communications Centers (ECCs) personnel, and internal support teams effectively adopt Comtech applications and platforms and can confidently navigate support processes.

Provide mentoring and support to your experienced team of ID and Training professionals. Ensure that they have the resources they need to develop, maintain, and deliver informative and engaging video content, instructor-led training materials and virtual instructor-led sessions that satisfy customers worldwide.

Responsibilities:

  • Produce and maintain training development and delivery plans, cost estimates, and a resource leveling plan.
  • Track labor actuals for your team’s activities, managing to scope and budget.
  • Stay abreast of software release and deployment project schedules, scope changes, and dependencies that may impact your team and their content, and proactively escalate risks.
  • Coordinate with ops engineering teams to ensure correct software versions are installed in training labs.
  • Coach your team members in:
    1. Developing content outlines, scripts, and storyboards.
    2. Maintaining clear and timely communication on project status with you and internal customers.
    3. Managing the quality review process.
    4. Provisioning training labs.
    5. Scheduling training sessions.
    6. Facilitating an engaging and welcoming virtual classroom environment—ensure that participants can access software demos, hands-on labs, and ensure that trainers provide leadership for participants, monitor student progress, chat windows, and follow-up on any questions.
    7. Acting as passionate advocates for the end user experience—partnering with engineering, Product Owners, UX, documentation and customer support teams to help drive design improvements back into our systems, software, and customer outreach and support processes.
    8. Posting recordings and supporting materials to the customer experience portal.
  • Maintain training satisfaction metrics and produce reports for trainers and stakeholders; proactively adjust materials and teaching techniques based on metrics.
  • Audit online training content and provide usage reports.
  • Monitor and address issues reported by learners or stakeholders.
  • Participate in weekly team, program, and project calls, where you will clearly communicate your team’s status, needs, scope changes and any risks/blocking issues.
  • Occasionally lead by example by stepping in as an individual contributor to fill any short-term resource gaps that arise.

Skills:

  • People development and interpersonal skills.
  • Expert knowledge of industry-wide best practices in instructional design and training.
  • Experience training 9-1-1 authorities, ECC, and/or telco operations staff highly desirable.
  • Expert in U.S. English style, usage, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Strong program management and resource-leveling skills--systematically manage to project scope, costs, dependencies, constraints, and skill sets.
  • Experience delivering virtual training in a dynamic, engaging way, and mentoring others in these techniques.
  • An eye for clear, visually appealing content.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills, including strong negotiation skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to focus and prioritize in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in Office 365, including Microsoft Power Point, Excel, Word, and SharePoint (or similar applications), Adobe Creative Suite, Go1 Learning Platform (or similar course development and management tools).
  • Proficiency using JIRA, ClickUp, Monday, MS Project Server (or similar tools) for project management and staff planning.
  • Ability to rapidly digest complex technical topics and explain them in different ways to diverse technical and non-technical audiences. For example:
    1. Familiarity with Next Generation Core Services, ESInets, i3, and impacts on state authorities, PSAPs, Originating Service Providers and the public
    2. Familiarity with containerized cloud platforms, Unix/Linux OSs, Kubernetes, and/or network monitoring and publish-subscribe messaging protocols
  • Ability to work as a supportive team member and thrive under pressure.

Requirements:

  • 3+ years’ leading training and instructional design teams in telecommunications or IT environments:
  • Experience working in SDLCs, and awareness of different project management approaches and how to best manage your team’s productivity within them.
  • Experience implementing and administering Learning Management Systems.
  • Hands-on experience developing and delivering conceptual and functional instructional content (samples highly desired).
  • Bachelor’s degree** (concentration in adult education/learning, instructional design, or technical communication preferred, but not required)
  • Learning & Development-related certifications are appreciated, but not required (for example, CPLP, CPTM, etc.)
