Job Description:

A shop hourly position with the primary responsibilities of welding thin gauge material using welding procedures and equipment, fabrication of quality cowls matching dimensions on prints, and the ability to recognize and identify Cowl tooling issues while making adjustments accordingly. As a senior mechanic, the Mechanic I is an influencer, who leads junior mechanics or teams as assigned and demonstrates BAC's values of Earning Trust, Embracing Responsibility, Showing Courage, and Driving Innovation. The Mechanic I will also be required to train and mentor junior mechanics and assist the department leadership team with daily assignments as directed. The purpose for every position at BAC regardless of department or level can be summed up as doing the right thing in the right way.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
• Owns personal and team safety. Observes all safety rules and uses the proper safety equipment at all times.
• Operate equipment in a manner that maximizes productivity and quality.
• Train junior mechanics of the team and guide their work performance.
• Provide leadership of the team in the absence of the Station Lead and or Team Leader.
• Understand departmental metrics and communicate / interpret for junior mechanics.
• Update and post metrics as assigned.
• Accurately complete paperwork or online data entry required by department.
• Document processes for knowledge capture and the training of junior mechanics.
• Participate in continuous improvement activities and projects.
• Contribute to departmental safety improvements.
• Produce to the highest quality standards and instruct junior mechanics on precise quality practices
• Meet the FPY requirements as stated in Class C Welder Performance Qualification (WPQ).
• Fabricate fixtures for tooling as required.
• Install special accessories on units and their function and installation.
• Maintain the work area and equipment in a clean orderly condition through the use of 5'S and follow all prescribed safety regulations.
• Help develop ways to improve the safety performance and eliminate any safety issues identified in the field and the plant.
• Help achieve departmental safety goals including near miss reporting and safety metrics.
• Responsible for the accuracy of work, maintain a steady work pace and avoid the loss production time by adhering to safety rules.
• Meet or exceed production goals for shift. Ensure individual activities embrace sustainability, reduce the impact on the environment, minimize waste, maximize recycling, minimize energy and water usage.
• Support a culture of innovation through original thinking to improve processes, methods, systems or services; translates new ideas into business opportunities
• Will be required to perform other duties as requested, directed or assigned.

NATURE & SCOPE
Reports to the Team Leader, Station Leader or other supervisor as assigned. Provides hands on leadership and mentoring to junior mechanics as well as be prepared to fulfill department leadership roles as needed. As a senior mechanic, expertise may be requested to participate on regional project teams. Expectation is to operate as an influencer and subject matter expert

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
• Demonstrated ability to lead small groups.
• Effective written communication including documentation of processes, and the communication of those processes with fellow mechanics. Ability to communicate to supervisors and co-workers with written memos or emails that are professional, concise and clearly understood.
• Demonstrated oral communication skills including the ability to communicate professionally with BAC customer and co-workers. The ability to share information verbally that is clearly understood and technically accurate.
• Ability to read and interpret drawings and blueprints.
• Competent in math including: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractional computations, and fraction to decimal conversions.
• Ability to use hand held measuring tools including tape measure, micrometer, and protractor.
• A minimum of one year experience in the department is preferred.
• Knowledge of continuous improvement tools and ability to support root cause analysis for identified quality issues.
• Thorough knowledge of all hazards related to machine operation and related safety sensitive areas of the department and plant.
• Demonstrated commitment to safety and adherence to safety standards.
• High level of product knowledge of BAC's numerous models and parts.
• Computer competency with MS Excel including updating data and generating metrics in pre-formatted spreadsheets.
• Demonstrated flexibility to work at multiple department work stations and adapt to change.
• Ability to work on cross functional teams in support of plant objectives.
• Ability to work professionally with BAC Representatives, Customers, and Field Service co-workers.
• Ability to work independently.
• Must pass the Class C Welder training & theoretical testing.
• Proficient with Mig welding procedures and equipment.
• Able to read and understand all types of BAC drawings (assembly, fabrication, welding).
• Know what welding symbols mean.
• Able to identify different welding wires and gas for proper application.
• Understand welding principles and be able to use cutting tools, i.e., plasma cutters, etc.
• Able to proficiently operate the Cowl machine, as well as understand the capacity, limitations, maintenance requirements, and troubleshooting.
• Understand bill of materials.
• Capable of working from ladders up to 20 feet in height and cowl platform on a daily basis.
• Familiar with all appropriate procedures, policies, and instructions of ISO for area of assignment to ensure quality.
• Understands, mentors and drives LEAN principles in the area.
• Knowledgeable of and meets quality standards on a consistent basis.

WORKING CONDITIONS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The working environment includes lifting up to 50lbs. Standing is to be expected up to 80% of the time. Additional activities include: walking, reaching, bending, stooping, and sitting. Fine hand manipulation of controls is needed as well as hand eye coordination to perform changes. Working hours can include any of three shifts and generally are scheduled for forty hours a week. Some weekend overtime is to be expected. Working temperatures include both wide fluctuations within the plant as well as ambient outside temperatures.
