Job Description:

The Davis Lab in the Department of Biochemistry, Cancer Biology, Neuroscience and Pharmacology is seeking a highly motivated undergraduate student for a part-time research assistant to work in the field of structural biology. The Davis Lab has partnered with the Damo Lab (Fisk University) and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to develop paramagneic protocols using protein-crystal samples. These paramagnetic protein crystals will be tested on a newly designed neutron diffraction instrument at ORNL. Research Assistants will be trained to purify protein and set up crystallization experiments to generate the protein samples to be tested. The Davis Lab has established the HBCU Crystallization Lab, which will be instrumental in the education and research related to this project.



Daily Operations



  • Learn and implement protein expression and purification protocols on protein samples; Learn and implement protein crystallization studies; maintain lab inventories associated with protein production and crystallization

  • Collaborate in interdisciplinary teams; keep abreast of field by facilitating lab journal clubs and attending related seminars

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience



The Research Assistant will be assigned various lab functions to help move the project forward. No prior training needed, but the ability to learn and think critically will be advantageous. Students with previous protein research experience will be given preference.


  • Part time availability (20 hours per week)


Desired Majors:



  • Science (Biology, Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Neuroscience etc.); Computer science




Qualifications



  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. and must not require sponsorship for employment visa status now, or in the future (ex. H1-B, F-1);

  • Candidates must be actively enrolled in an accredited University for the duration of the internship assignment pursuing a Master's degree;

  • Minimum GPA of 2.8 is required

  • Ability to demonstrate strong analytical and quantitative skills is required;

  • Excellent communication, presentation, and leadership skills are preferred;

  • Must be a self-starter works independently while contributing to the team goals;

  • Proven leadership/participation with campus programs and/or community service activities is desired
