Job Description:

Federal Signal is looking for an Assistant Controller to serve as a member of site Finance team, responsible for the accounting operations of assigned division(s) including generation of periodic financial reports, maintenance of accounting records in accordance with a comprehensive set of controls designed to mitigate risk, and ensuring reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles.

Key Activities/Responsibilities :


  • Provide support to BU Controller ensuring information is prepared and maintained in accordance with all statutory and regulatory requirements for the jurisdictions in which the business unit operates as well as Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Company standard policies and procedures (SPP).

  • Assist in maintaining internal control systems to satisfy Sarbanes Oxley requirements and Federal Signal Standards of Internal Controls (SICs) and confirm all documentation is prepared and completed in accordance with Company policy.

  • Hands on participation in the financial close process including preparing/reviewing journal entries, submission of results to Corporate, account reconciliations, providing financial information/analytics as requested.

  • Prepare relevant financial reporting of performance and detailed analysis of variances.

  • Oversee intercompany and CAPEX activities for the business unit.

  • Support internal and external audits and work with Controller to resolve any identified issues timely.

  • Apply continuous improvement methodology to improve the cost structure of the business unit.

  • Manage assigned team and provide for the following:  coaching, training, development, policy enforcement, performance management, and corrective action.

Job Requirements/ Skills Needed:


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance required, Master’s or MBA preferred

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Preferred

  • 5+ years’ experience in accounting and financial reporting

  • 3+ years’ experience in a manufacturing environment preferred

  • 3+ years’ Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems experience

  • Strong working knowledge of accounting practices in the manufacturing sector

  • Knowledge of finance operations and cost control principles including the following:

    • Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)

    • Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) requirements



  • Knowledge of automated financial and accounting reporting systems (JDE preferred)

  • Proven effectiveness in leading and directing the work of others

  • Ability to ensure compliance to and identify weaknesses in accounting controls and policies

  • Ability to prepare financial reports, statements, and projections

  • Demonstrated resourcefulness in setting priorities and proposing new ways of creating efficiencies

  • Strong written, communication and interpersonal skills required with the ability to participate in and facilitate group meetings
