Job Description


Position Summary

The Biller lab in the Biological Sciences department at Wellesley College seeks two full-time laboratory technicians who will contribute to interdisciplinary collaborative research efforts in marine microbial ecology and evolution. Current projects focus on exploring the functions of bacterial extracellular vesicles in mediating microbial interactions in the oceans. With guidance, technicians will be responsible for planning and conducting experiments in both the lab and field, and will also contribute to student mentoring, general laboratory management, ordering, and ensuring laboratory safety. The position will provide opportunities to gain experience with a variety of experimental skills including large-scale bacterial culturing; isolation of extracellular vesicles and nanoparticle analysis; flow cytometry; working with marine viruses; molecular techniques such as quantitative PCR and nucleic acid extraction; oceanographic sampling; and bioinformatic analysis. While the position is focused on conducting experiments toward specific externally funded projects, all members of the lab are encouraged and supported to conduct related research projects of their own design as time and interest allow. Experiments may require occasional time in the lab on nights or weekends. Travel to collaborating labs or field sites may be involved. Previous research experience in microbiology, microbial ecology, or related areas preferred.



Primary Position Responsibilities


  • Carrying out experiments in the lab and field (~60%)

  • Data analysis (~15%)

  • Training/assisting undergraduate students (~10%)

  • Maintenance of laboratory culture collection (~10%)

  • Laboratory management tasks (~5%)

  • Timely progress toward completing experiments

  • Attention to detail and scientific rigor

  • Effective laboratory assistance to the PI and other students

  • Clear communication and record-keeping


Supervisor Responsibilities

  • Training and general mentoring

  • Provide guidance and oversight of all experimental procedures


Education Required

  • B.A./B.S. or equivalent in biology or related scientific field


Experience Required

  • Prior experience working in a biology laboratory setting


Skills and Abilities Required

  • Self-motivation, ability to work both independently and within a team

  • Prior microbiology / bacterial culturing experience

  • Experience with molecular biology techniques

  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to coordinate work on multiple ongoing projects

  • Analytical skills and attention to detail

This position is essential for advancing the scientific research program of Prof. Steven Biller in the Biology department and fulfilling the objectives of externally funded grants.
