Performs a variety of standard estimating activities (individually or as part of a team) on an assigned project/program. The Sr. Estimator at this level is responsible for the overall planning and coding efforts to produce comprehensive project cost estimates. The successful applicant will provide data and cost analysis for estimate review and presentations, will be responsible for developing bid strategies, site investigations, managing contracts, takeoffs, detailed breakdown of cost components, indirect cost and analysis of margins, and demonstrates familiarity in applying company policies and assigned project/program practices and procedures.
Major Duties and Responsibilities Include: (But not limited to the following)
Initial client contact to assess scope of work and resources required to successfully complete project
Prepare complete estimate for selected project with detailed review of proposal specifications, drawings, takeoff information, contracting, and the like
Prepares material takeoffs on assigned contract, project, or program from engineering drawings, plans, and specifications.
Reviews takeoffs prepared by others to check for completeness, appropriate definition, and accuracy.
Prepares detailed breakdown structures for contracts, projects, or elements of a program sufficient to define the scope to be delivered.
Defines the specific scope intended by the contract documents, project development requirements and/or the program element components, systems and subsystems.
Reviews contract documents to access contract risk and significant exposure to estimated cost if potential risks are experienced; assigns reasonable maximum cost and schedule exposure resulting from potential risks.
Mentoring estimators, sales representatives and interns to develop their estimating abilities
Includes interfacing with customer representatives, other contractors, etc.
Provide technical assistance, i.e., interpretation of drawings, recommending construction methods and equipment, etc., as required.
Initiate and maintain extra work estimating and change orders
Identify new and expanded business opportunities while at customer sites and through customer contact
Other duties as assigned
Position Requirements
Knowledge of:
Terminology used in general construction operations
Computer/Office Machines - Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Blue Beam, Bid 2 Win
Ability to:
Work in a fast-paced environment and to meet deadlines
Must be at least 18 years of age
Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing preferably in English
Reacts well under pressure and be detail oriented
Accepts responsibility for own actions; follows through on commitments
Must be able to work well in a teamwork environment
Regular and consistent attendance and punctuality is required and an essential function of this position
Understand and follow oral and written directions
Experience and Education
Minimum of 10 years of experience as a Lead or Senior Estimator on relevant heavy concrete construction required
B.S. Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field is Preferred although not mandatory with solid experience.
Advanced math and computer skills; Previous experience using estimating database supported software
3-5 years construction field experience
Ability to conceptualize the project schedule from project start through completion, including sequence/phasing of work
Must have a clear understanding of, and ability to work with, construction contract commercial documents, drawings and specifications.
Knowledge of assigned discipline, estimating techniques and cost control
Ability to interpret computerized cost data and systems
Working Conditions
Indoors within an Office Building; Outdoors on job locations and in the shop and yard
Exposure to heavy equipment while on job locations, and in the shop and yard
Role may require working nights and weekends and some holidays
