Summary: This is a generalist position that will provide comprehensive psychotherapy services at CAPS in-person and via telemental health for students. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Provision of multiculturally-informed brief counseling and psychotherapy (in-person and virtually) for individuals and couples with diverse presenting concerns. Provision of clinical services including but not limited to triage/initial consultations, intakes, treatment planning, group therapy, advocacy and crisis intervention services, psychoeducation and case management. Engagement in outreach programming and initiatives Completion of required documentation in an electronic health record system. Engagement in a collaborative multidisciplinary health team, communicating to establish plans for care. Participation in staff meetings, multicultural seminars, integrated treatment teams, continuing education programs, and other organizational meetings. Engagement in other duties as assigned. The counselor will report directly to and be considered part of the staff of Counseling and Psychiatric Services (CAPS). An appropriate supervisor will be selected within CAPS for the counselor position. This counseling position will participate in CAPS activities (e.g., staff meetings, outreach activities, CAPS initiatives), but will do so with an awareness that the primary purpose of this counselor is to support the students within the designated area on campus completes grant, University, and program documentation as needed. This position will be predominantly on site with some remote time allowed. This position has ethical, professional, and legal responsibilities to maintain records regarding work with clients and to protect client confidentiality in accordance with guidelines set by the granting agency, MSU, the State of Michigan, and other professional associations.
Unit Specific Education/Experience/SkillsKnowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing one or two years of post- bachelor degree work such as a Masters in Counseling, or Psychology; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in counseling in a clinic/agency environment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The job also requires certification or licensing by the State of Michigan.
Desired QualificationsKnowledge, skills, and expertise required to proficiently conduct, document, and evaluate individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, and consultation with a college-aged population. History of demonstrated interest, passion and experience in serving individuals in the performing and creative arts. Demonstrated competency or expertise in one or more specialty areas: Challenges related to performance and creative activity (i.e, grief/loss due to injury, performance anxiety, creative blocks). Experience working with diverse and multicultural student populations, international students, students of color, LGBTIA+, other diverse populations. Familiarity with work in an integrated mental health setting Experience with mood/bipolar disorders, autism spectrum disorders, eating disorders, trauma including PTSD and complex trauma. Three to five years of professional experience; experience in an interdisciplinary setting.
