Position OverviewThe Institute for Digital Research in the Humanities (IDRH) graduate assistant works closely with the Institute's Codirectors (and interim codirectors) to support and maintain the communication, organization, and events of the IDRH. Duties include campus outreach, assessment, communication, message design, website maintenance, and a broad range of tasks supporting IDRH programming.
The graduate assistant reports to the Codirectors of the IDRH. The position requires a familiarity with or strong interest in the digital humanities. Working closely with the Codirectors, the successful applicant will contribute to a collaborative approach to digital scholarship that raises the visibility of digital humanities on campus and enhances KU's reputation in the DH community.
The IDRH supports, creates, and disseminates digital research in the humanities (DH). Established in 2010 as a partnership between KU Libraries, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and the Hall Center for the Humanities, the IDRH provides an intellectual hub for DH and fosters an interdisciplinary conversation across the university community. Led by a a co-director from KU Libraries and a co-director from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, IDRH aims to build a flourishing environment for innovative exploration at the intersection of digital technology and humanities research by providing
resources and training in the practices and tools of DH. Promoting public scholarship and partnership-building, the IDRH facilitates externally funded research and welcomes everyone, from the curious to the novice to the expert. Major IDRH initiatives include a DH Fellows program for KU faculty and students; a public-facing DH colloquium; offering regular workshops in DH tools and methods; providing grants for research and teaching; project consulting and partnerships; and externally funded grant initiatives in the digital humanities.

Job Description100% IDRH Support

• Lead IDRH Communication. With input from Codirectors, compose, design and execute a range of communication strategies. This involves email (MailChimp), social media, newsletter writing and targeted communiques.


• Website support. Keep the IDRH website up to date, including, regular updates of news, events, programs and participants.


• Event and Programming support. This involves a broad range of tasks to support both online and in-person events. Tasks include, but are not limited to, registration management, securing catering, tech support, room reservations, managing RSVPs and fielding questions from participants.


• With input from Codirectors, design and execute assessments of IDRH programming and events. This involves tracking attendance at events, overseeing occasional surveys and seeking input from participants. It also involves ensuring that all IDRH consultations are tracked and reported.


• Attend regular IDRH meetings.

Required Qualifications

1. During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: 1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).


2. Experience organizing complex projects and tasks. Experience keeping multiple tasks going at once.


3. Experience in a project that requires self-motivation. Demonstrated ability to work productively in a remote environment without supervision.


4. Excellent communication skills.


5. Demonstrated experience working collegially and collaboratively in a team environment.


6. Demonstrated interest in the digital humanities.


7. Demonstrated ability to manage a website or CMS (Content Management System) and use organizational tools to keep the team focused.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Experience with one or more tools or platforms for creating scholarly digital projects, which may include, but are not limited to: Omeka, ArcGIS StoryMaps, Hypothes.is, Scalar or Jekyll.


2. Experience with web development and/or programming tools, which may include, but are not limited to: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Python, Ruby, R, Git and Jupyter Notebook.


3. Broad familiarity with current trends and resources in the digital humanities.


4. Willingness to develop and deliver workshops, instruction sessions and other training.


5. Willingness to consult with faculty and students about DH projects (including instructional and pedagogical projects).
