Job Description:

Position OverviewThe Office of Faculty Affairs is looking for a creative-minded student assistant for its new Communications Specialist position. A successful candidate will support the work of the communications manager by creating digital and print materials for fliers and social media, making updates to our website, and editing content for various communications purposes.


This position will require skills in graphic design, photography, videography and writing. The applicant should be detail oriented, a quick learner, and able to manage numerous tasks at once using strong organization skills. Punctuality and responsibility are expected.

Job Description


  • Design promotional materials and assets for items such as: presentations, event invitations and programs, social media graphics, web imagery, and flyers, using Adobe Creative Suite.

  • Take photos and video at Faculty Affairs events and for other promotional purposes. Edit photos and videos based on project needs.

  • Make updates to the Office of Faculty Affairs website through KU CMS-Sunflower and under the communications manager's direction.

  • Perform other communications tasks as assigned.

  • Availability to work 10 hours during the work week, with occasional evening availability (once per month).

  • This position will work during the academic year (fall/spring) with optional summer hours. Availability over academic breaks is not required.

Required Qualifications

  1. Current KU student majoring in design, journalism, film, photography, public relations, or a related field. During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: 1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).

  2. Experience working with the Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator as demonstrated by application materials.

  3. Experience with photography, videography and/or media production, as demonstrated by coursework or previous work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Experience creating online content for website, social media and electronic newsletters.

  2. Understanding of digital accessibility best practices.

  3. Website content management experience (e.g., Drupal, Word Press, HTML, CSS, Java Script, etc.).

  4. Advanced writing and proofreading skills (e.g., social media, newsletter, etc.).

  5. Photography and photo editing skills.

  6. Basic videography and video editing skills.

WORK SCHEDULE & LOCATION:


10 hours per week with availability between the hours of 8am - 5pm, Monday thru Friday. This is an in-person position located in Strong Hall, Room 145.
