The Opportunity: Outpatient Surgery Pharmacist
Why This Role Is Important
Under the direction of the Director of Ambulatory Pharmacy Services, the Outpatient Surgery Pharmacist will perform a variety of professional level functions to assist in providing patients with optimal pharmaceutical care. The pharmacist's efforts will be directed primarily toward assisting providers and nurses with clinical inquiries, overseeing/checking the work of pharmacy technicians, including the dispensing of medications and pharmaceutical preparations, internal committee participation, review of medication orders, involvement in the medication reconciliation process for surgical center patients, responding to emergencies throughout the surgery center, and precepting Doctor of Pharmacy students/pharmacy residents.
What You'll Work On
The Outpatient Surgery Pharmacist will be primarily accountable for:
Reviewing, approving, and clarifying peri-operative medication orders for appropriateness based on current clinical and institutional guidelines as well as patient-specific criteria (drug allergies; drug-drug interactions; and weight-based, renal, or hepatic dosage adjustments.)
Advising clinicians on drug selection based on current clinical guidelines to optimize drug therapy and assisting with drug information questions
Overseeing pharmacy technician activities and performing quality checks as needed
Completing applicable clinical competencies and participating in new clinical pharmacy programs as established by the iCare Pharmacy Team
Assisting with periodic review and creation of sterile compounding recipes to ensure compliance with USP < 797> standards
Checking compounded preparations for accuracy, including the additive(s), parent solution, and label
Overseeing the ordering, storage, and handling of all medications and supplies for the perioperative area
Ensure compliance with controlled substance distribution and
Developing/prepping anesthesia trays and overseeing the refilling process for anesthesia workstations and medication towers
Ensuring regulatory compliance with pharmaceutical waste disposal and assist with cost containment strategies
Performing narcotic audits per protocol for all iCare personnel who obtain or administer narcotics to prevent any drug diversion.
Providing counseling and drug education to patients and families including information on drug interactions
Sustaining and adhering to the MGB iCare formulary by minimizing non-formulary procurements when possible
Participating in the training, education, and mentoring of other pharmacists, pharmacy interns, and technicians
Assisting with the development of policies and procedures related to medication use and safety
Performing required media fill tests and fingerprint testing
Receiving surgery center staff at pharmacy entrance and answering incoming calls
Educating perioperative staff on new policies related to the medication use process and conducting in-services for any new or existing drugs as needed
Participating in quality, safety, and other project work outside of regular staffing duties
Reviewing quarterly medication quality audits for the OR Pharmacy satellite, perioperative area, and clinics where medications are stored and dispensed
Providing training to new anesthesia providers and nursing colleagues regarding pharmacy services, controlled substance management, and pharmacy automation
Responds to emergencies within the perioperative areas and maintains certification in Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
Participating in area specific staff and department meetings as necessary

Qualifications
Required Experience
Graduate of ACPE accredited college of pharmacy
Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) required
Licensed or eligible for licensure to practice pharmacy in New Hampshire
Preferred Experience We Hope You Have
Completion of American Society of Health System Pharmacy (ASHP) accredited PGY1 residency
Experience (1-2) years working within AMC and community care settings (periop specific preferred)
Knowledge of USP < 797>, < 795>, and < 800>
Understanding of basic functionality of automated dispensing cabinets and ability to troubleshoot
Demonstration of knowledge of pharmacy regulations pertaining to ambulatory surgery centers
Familiarity with Epic Willow and OpTime
Familiarity with LEAN methodologies
Etc.
