Job Summary
The Mental Health Specialist position delivers clinical services to IU students who access Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). The primary focus on this position will be on students historically excluded or marginalized from higher education resources.
Department Specific Responsibilities
Demonstrates practice from a culturally informed manner through case consultation and continuing education opportunities.
Practices in a manner consistent with the values of the Student Services Division
Conducts individual initial consultation meetings with students to assess current needs and appropriateness of fit for CAPS scope of service.
Conducts individual intake assessments requiring appropriate caseload management to allow the incorporation of new clients in an on-going manner.
Provides on-going individual, group, and couples counseling.
Utilizes evidenced-based clinical interventions to ensure timely resolution of client's presenting concerns.
Maintains accurate, timely clinical notes, in accordance with CAPS policies and procedures.
Adheres to relevant ethical and legal standards of HIPAA, relevant professional bodies, state boards.
Consults with and refers to other professionals when appropriate, i.e., CAPS psychiatrists, IU Health Center medical providers, and dietitians. When appropriate, utilizes additional campus resources to support clients, such as academic support, career services, cultural centers, Student Advocates, Accessible Education Center, and Confidential Victim Advocates
Engages fully in educational and preventive outreach activities. Serves on standing committees of interest or as assigned by Director of CAPS.
Serves as liaison to a campus group, as requested by CAPS Outreach Coordinator, consulting with said group regarding educational programs with particular attention to the mental health needs of BIPOC and historically excluded populations.
Participates in a minimum of 2 CAPS active educational outreach programs per semester as requested by Outreach Coordinator/Director.
Provides consultation to campus community who contact CAPS regarding a student of concern, including documentation pertinent information in a student's chart, and referring to non-counseling resources as indicated.
Supervises CAPS trainees who may focus on sexual and relationship violence clinician interventions.
Conducts inter-educational seminars to trainees or staff, as requested by Training Director or Director of CAPS
Attends meetings and clinical teams.
General Responsibilities

Consults with and refers to other professionals when appropriate (e.g. psychiatrists, medical providers, and dietitians).
Utilizes evidence-based clinical interventions and, as appropriate, document in clinical notes.
Serves on emergency response teams.
Participates in active educational outreach programs.
May supervise Master's level mental health students.
Qualifications
EDUCATION
Required
Master's degree in relevant mental health area from an accredited program (preferably in Mental Health Counseling, Social Work, Clinical or Counseling Psychology, or Couples and Family Therapy program)
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required
4 years of post-degree experience
Preferred
1 year of clinical experience
Experience providing clinical services and outreach programs to Black and African American, Latinx, Asian, and/or Indigenous students.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
Required
Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of Indiana or license eligible upon date of hire
Licensed Mental Health Counselor in the state of Indiana or license eligible upon date of hire

Working Conditions / Demands
This role requires sedentary work as well as extended durations of moving about the workplace. It requires the ability to move objects and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds, and the ability to discern between various objects and devices and to position patients. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
