Job Summary


The Department of Biology at Columbus State University seeks a full-time, 10-month tenure-track Assistant Professor position in genetics. We seek a candidate with an expertise in genetics who is enthusiastic about teaching both undergraduate and graduate students and implementing a student-centered research program that mentors bachelor and masters students. Excellent candidates will create synergy in the department and have an enthusiasm for science and working with multidimensional groups.


Teaching responsibilities will include both lecture and lab of lower and upper division undergraduate and graduate courses within the department. Undergraduate courses will include those for both majors and non-majors. The opportunity to develop new courses in the candidate's area of specialty will also be available. The candidate may be asked to teach additional courses as needed based on demand and qualifications.


The Department of Biology offers a collegial atmosphere, a thriving study abroad and competitive pre-med program, along with teaching and lab space equipped for hands-on experiential learning. The Biology Department is comprised of 9 full-time tenure-track faculty members, 2 full-time lecturers, and 1 Lab Coordinator. Highlights of our facilities include a modern and recently renovated science building containing cellular/molecular biology and chemistry labs, recently renovated anatomy & physiology, microbiology and general biology labs, a scanning electron microscope, HPLC and tissue culture facility. Responsibilities


The successful candidate will teach an average of 12 contact hours per semester in subjects related to the field of genetics but may also provide lecture and labs in introductory biology for both majors and non-majors, as well as additional courses as needed based on demand and qualifications.; The candidate must be able to demonstrate experience in teaching and provide evidence of, or the potential for, excellence in teaching. Excellent candidates will be able to demonstrate the capacity to integrate teaching and research activities through high-impact practices like experiential learning.; The candidate will also be expected to develop a research program that includes CSU students. The department has a growing master's program, and the successful candidate will be strongly encouraged to support. Excellent candidates will be able to demonstrate the ability to develop a successful research program that is adaptable for both undergraduate and graduate students.; Although the search is not restricted to a specific organism or biological discipline, the successful candidate must possess expertise in using modern genetic approaches in research activities that foster both independent and collaborative research projects. Excellent candidates will demonstrate their ability to seek and/or have some success in obtaining extramural finding.; The candidate is expected to be a creative individual, who is eager to work in a collaborative environment, work collegially and effectively with university students, faculty, staff, and the surrounding community.; In addition to demonstrating research excellence and a commitment to high-quality teaching and mentoring with a demonstrated record of being supportive, the candidate will also be expected to participate in service to the department, college, university and community.



Required Qualifications


Applicants must have a Ph.D. in a field of biology, MD, or MD/PhD prior to the hire start date. We seek talented applicants qualified for an Assistant Professor position.



Proposed Salary


Salary is commensurate with experience.



Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities


Teaching responsibilities include but are not limited to the preparation of lectures for classroom and laboratory courses; maintaining and improving competence in subjects being taught; conferring with students on course materials; reviewing written examinations and papers; evaluating presentations; supervising independent study projects and advising. These responsibilities also include following all university policies and procedures (e.g. attendance, grading, mandatory trainings, etc.).; Candidate must have the ability to develop and maintain collaborative relationships throughout the organization, communicate effectively and possess proficient computer skills, including familiarity with the Microsoft Suite of Office Applications. The successful applicant must be willing to work a flexible schedule, work well in a changing environment, as well as demonstrate the ability to work well with students, faculty and staff at all levels.
